Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Technical Director - Mechanical Engineering (Buildings) to lead building services projects from Sydney. You will set design direction, oversee technical delivery, and drive client engagement across health, defence, transport and other sectors.

With Chartered Engineer status and 18+ years in Building Services, you will mentor engineers, grow the team, and contribute to winning work while upholding highest technical and ethical standards in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer registration or transferrable RPEQ/RPEV with relevant professional recognition.
  • 18+ years in Building Services consultancy or significant design experience in Mechanical contracting.
  • Proven track record in technical design and project delivery while building strong client relationships.
  • Experience leading multiple technical projects across diverse market sectors.
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills.
  • Australian Citizenship required; defence clearance is highly regarded.

Job Description

Due to strategic growth, we are looking for a Technical Director level Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Engineering team, based in Sydney. This opportunity is ideal for a well-connected industry professional who brings deep technical expertise, strong client engagement skills and experience delivering complex projects across multiple sectors.

How you’ll make a difference:

Provide strategic leadership across major multidisciplinary projects, overseeing technical delivery and ensuring commercial performance and client satisfaction.

Lead and grow client relationships across health, defence, aviation, transport, sports infrastructure and other key sectors in Sydney.

Drive technical excellence by setting design direction, conducting high-level reviews, and ensuring best practice standards across all mechanical deliverables.

Mentor and develop engineering talent, building capability within the team and creating clear pathways for career progression.

Contribute to business growth through work winning, market engagement, and strengthening AECOM’s reputation as a trusted technical leader in the region.

The qualities that help you thrive:

  • The following qualifications and experience are highly desired, but if you don’t tick all the boxes, you could still be a perfect fit for this role. Please apply, all applications will be considered.
  • Chartered Engineer with relevant professional engineer registration, or transferrable RPEQ/RPEV registration. Equivalent recognition with a relevant professional body will also be considered.
  • Ideally, 18+ years’ experience in a Building Services consultancy or significant design experience within the Mechanical Contracting field.
  • Proven record in technical design and project delivery while building and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • In-depth knowledge of Building Services projects and Standards, able to share technical expertise with clients, junior engineers, and broader teams across major projects.
  • Experience managing multiple technical projects simultaneously, with demonstrable design experience across a variety of market sectors.
  • Excellent communication and soft skills, with a passion for mentoring and developing junior engineers.
  • Due to the nature of projects, Australian Citizenship is required, with current / previously held defence clearance highly regarded.
