About The Role

Our client is looking for an experienced Technical Business Analyst (Data) to join a high-performing data and analytics team on a contract basis. You will act as the bridge between business stakeholders and technical data teams, translating business needs into clear, well-defined data requirements, mappings and specifications that engineers, architects and analysts can build against.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable in a workshop with senior stakeholders and in a SQL editor profiling source data. You will shape data solutions end to end, from discovery and requirements through to testing and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate business needs into functional and technical specifications, user stories and acceptance criteria
  • Perform source system analysis and data profiling using SQL to assess data quality, structure and completeness
  • Produce source-to-target mappings, data dictionaries, business glossaries and data lineage documentation
  • Work closely with data engineers, data architects and BI developers to design and deliver data pipelines, data models and reports
  • Define and validate business rules, transformation logic and data quality checks
  • Support data migration, integration and data warehouse / Lakehouse initiatives
  • Plan and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT), including preparing test cases and validating outputs against requirements
  • Identify data gaps, risks and dependencies, and recommend practical solutions
  • Support data governance, metadata management and data privacy practices
  • Contribute to Agile ceremonies, including backlog refinement, sprint planning and show-and-tells
  • Provide clear status updates and manage stakeholder expectations throughout delivery
Essential Skills And Experience
  • 7+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, with a strong focus on data, analytics or data platform projects
  • Strong SQL skills for querying, profiling, validating and reconciling data
  • Proven experience writing source-to-target mappings and data transformation specifications
  • Solid understanding of data warehousing, data modelling (dimensional, relational) and ETL / ELT concepts
  • Experience working with modern cloud data platforms (for example Azure, AWS, Snowflake, Databricks or Microsoft Fabric)
  • Experience gathering requirements for BI and reporting solutions (for example Power BI, Tableau or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of data quality, data governance and metadata management principles
  • Experience working in Agile / Scrum delivery environments
  • Excellent documentation skills, including BRDs, FRDs, user stories, process flows and data models
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Desirable Skills
  • Experience with data catalogue or governance tools (for example Microsoft Purview, Collibra or Alation)
  • Familiarity with transformation tools such as dbt, Azure Data Factory or similar orchestration tooling
  • Working knowledge of Python for data analysis
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence
  • Exposure to data migration programs or large-scale data platform modernisation
  • Industry experience in financial services, government, utilities, retail or similar data-rich sectors
  • Relevant certifications (for example CBAP, IIBA-CBDA, Azure Data Fundamentals or similar)
