Job summary

Downer is seeking an experienced Team Leader, based in Cairns, to join our Origin Public & Embedded Networks Contract team. In this hands-on leadership role, you'll lead a small field crew delivering essential gas network maintenance, emergency response, asset repairs, meter works, and reinstatement activities across Queensland.

You’ll plan daily activities, direct team members and subcontractors, maintain safe work practices, and ensure all works meet safety, quality and customer service

Qualifications

• Certificate II or III in Gas Operations (or equivalent).
• Gas industry trade qualification or equivalent experience.
• Experience in gas maintenance, mains/services, emergency response or utility field operations.
• Experience leading or supervising small crews in field environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead a field crew to deliver gas network works safely and efficiently.
• Coordinate maintenance, repairs, leak investigations, meter works, and reinstatement activities.
• Plan daily work and allocate tasks to team members and subcontractors.
• Ensure BYDA reviews, asset location, excavation control and safety compliance.
• Coaching and developing team; manage customer and stakeholder interactions.
• Participate in standby and after-hours emergency rosters.

Job description

Downer is seeking an experienced Team Leader,based in Cairns to join our Origin Public & Embedded Networks Contract team. In this hands-on leadership role, you'll lead a small field crew delivering essential gas network maintenance, emergency response, asset repairs, meter works, reinstatement activities and customer-focused field services across Queensland.

As a Team Leader, you'll be responsible for planning daily activities, directing team members and subcontractors, maintaining safe work practices, and ensuring all works are completed to the highest standards of safety, quality and customer service. You'll play a critical role in supporting network reliability and responding to emergency situations when required.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading a field crew to safely deliver planned, reactive and emergency gas network works.
• Coordinating maintenance, repairs, leak investigations, meter works, isolation and reinstatement activities.
• Planning daily work programs and allocating tasks to team members and subcontractors.
• Conducting asset location, BYDA reviews and excavation control activities.
• Ensuring pressure testing, commissioning, decommissioning and close-out documentation is completed accurately.
• Coaching and supporting team members while promoting a strong Zero Harm culture.
• Managing customer and stakeholder interactions professionally and effectively.
• Participating in standby and out-of-hours emergency response rosters.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a safety-focused leader who enjoys working outdoors, leading from the front and delivering exceptional outcomes for customers and communities.

To be successful, you'll ideally have:

• Certificate II or III in Gas Operations (or equivalent relevant qualification).
• Gas industry trade qualification or equivalent experience.
• Proven experience in gas maintenance, mains and services, emergency response or utility field operations.
• Demonstrated experience leading or supervising small crews in field-based environments.
• A current manual driver's licence (medium or heavy vehicle licence advantageous).
• Experience locating underground assets, interpreting plans and completing BYDA requirements.
• Strong understanding of safety systems, quality requirements and environmental obligations.
• Experience operating field equipment, plant and machinery within competency.
• Excellent communication, customer service and stakeholder engagement skills.
