The Opportunity
This is an opportunity for an experienced primary design professional to take the next step into leadership while remaining closely connected to technical delivery. Reporting to the Manager - Primary Design, you will lead and support a team of designers and design drafters within our NSW Engineering team.
The role offers a genuine balance of approximately 80% hands-on technical design and 20% people leadership. You will provide technical direction, coordinate workloads, mentor team members and create the clarity and support they need to deliver high-quality work. You will contribute across high-voltage substations, BESS, data centre connections and other critical energy infrastructure projects.
About You
You are a technically credible primary design professional who enjoys helping others succeed. You may already lead people formally, or you may be a highly experienced Senior or Principal designer ready to step into your first dedicated team leadership role. Either way, you will bring sound judgement, an approachable style and the confidence to guide technical work while building strong relationships.
To be successful in this role, you will possess:
A relevant qualification in electrical engineering, engineering technology, building design, drafting or a related discipline.
Significant experience in primary design for high-voltage substations, ideally gained within the Australian transmission, utility, renewable energy or EPC sector.
Strong knowledge of substation layouts, electrical and fire clearances, maintenance access, equipment arrangements, standards compliance and multidisciplinary interfaces.
Proficiency with primary design and CAD tools such as AutoCAD and MicroStation, together with sound document management and quality assurance practices.
The ability to coordinate technical workloads, manage competing priorities and maintain quality across concurrent projects.
Clear communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to explain complex technical matters to different audiences.
A genuine interest in mentoring, developing and supporting others.
A current Australian driver's licence and willingness to undertake occasional project travel when required.
