Job summary

Downer Professional Services in Canberra is seeking a Systems Safety Engineer to manage and coordinate the CAF16 System Safety Program within defence projects. You will develop safety analyses, hazard assessments, and safety cases, while guiding the engineering team and ensuring governance under CASG policies and Australian legislation.

A strong background in materiel safety programs and an active security clearance are required, with opportunities to influence critical national security

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronic and Communications, Software or Computer Engineering.
  • Minimum five years' engineering experience leading a materiel System Safety Program.
  • Member of Engineers Australia, eligible for Chartered Professional Engineering (CPEng).
  • Experience leading or managing a materiel System Safety Program.
  • Formal training or recognised certification in systems safety.
  • Experience in a CASG/Defence program in a system safety role, preferably within sustainment.
  • Security clearance current/maintained per Commonwealth requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the CAF16 System Safety Program, including SSPP, hazard analyses and SCRs.
  • Execute system safety engineering in line with Australian legislation, Defence/CASG policies, and best practice standards.
  • Provide engineering advice on system safety to key stakeholders including the Chief Engineer and Executive Authority.
  • Oversee contractor system safety programs and review safety deliverables.
  • Evaluate engineering changes from a safety perspective and plan/review actions.
  • Provide safety guidance to CAF16 engineering team on software-related safety analyses and assurance.

Job description

Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia's future.

Downer Professional Services comprises of three business units our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer, which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence. Together, we are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security.

We currently have an opportunity for a Systems Safety Engineer in Canberra to manage, coordinate, and oversee the CAF16 System Safety Program.

What You'll Do
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining the CAF16 System Safety Program, including System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), hazard analyses and reports, risk logs and controls, Safety Case Reports (SCRs), safety specifications, and safety V&V activities.
  • Executing system safety engineering in accordance with Australian legislation, Defence/CASG policies, and recognised best practice standards.
  • Providing professional and competent engineering advice on system safety matters to key product stakeholders, including the IC3 SPO Chief Engineer and Executive Authority.
  • Providing oversight of contractor system safety programs, including the review of safety deliverables.
  • Evaluating engineering changes, and where required, scope, plan and review the implementation of actions from a safety perspective.
  • Providing systems safety guidance to the CAF16 engineering team, particularly on software-related safety considerations, including applicable hazard analysis techniques, risk assessment, and software assurance activities supporting system design and implementation.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electronic and Communications, Software or Computer Engineering.
  • A minimum of five years' experience as an engineer, with specific experience leading a materiel System Safety Program.
  • Member of Engineers Australia, eligible for Chartered Professional Engineering (CPEng) recognition.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or managing a materiel System Safety Program.
  • Formal training or recognised certification in systems safety.
  • Experience in a CASG/Defence program in a system safety role, preferably within sustainment.
  • Experience working within a technical regulatory or assurance framework (ICTAP/ETAP, LMSM, DASR, CASG EAF, DSwMS).

Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain a Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance withInternational Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
