Job summary

Babcock International Group is seeking a Senior Engineer – Systems Safety in Australia to lead safety case development, analyses and risk management across lifecycle programs for defence assets. You will guide complex engineering solutions, mentor engineers and collaborate with customers to ensure ALARP-compliant outcomes.

You will work in a flexible onsite/remote setup, influence key engineering decisions and support mission-critical capabilities with strong governance and safety culture.

Qualifications

  • Experience in systems safety within complex engineering environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; translate safety requirements into engineering solutions.
  • Ability to mentor, influence stakeholders and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Eligible to obtain Commonwealth Personnel Security Clearance.

About the Role

As a Senior Engineer – Systems Safety, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and integrity of critical Australian Defence Force Ground Support Equipment throughout its lifecycle.

Working as part of a highly skilled engineering team, you will lead the development, assessment and continuous improvement of safety cases, conduct complex safety analyses, and provide expert guidance to support the delivery of safe, compliant and operationally effective outcomes.

You’ll lead safety investigations, manage safety working groups, contribute to business development activities and collaborate closely with customers and multidisciplinary teams to solve complex engineering challenges, ensuring risks are understood and managed in accordance with industry standards and ALARP principles.

Your work will directly influence key engineering decisions while supporting some of Defence’s most important capabilities.

About You

You are an experienced safety engineering professional with a strong understanding of safety case management, hazard identification, risk assessment methodologies and regulatory compliance within complex engineering environments.

Comfortable working autonomously and making informed technical decisions, you can confidently translate safety requirements into practical engineering solutions while balancing operational, commercial and customer needs.

Your ability to analyse problems, interpret standards and produce high-quality technical documentation sets you apart. Equally important is your ability to build relationships and influence others.

You enjoy mentoring engineers, facilitating productive discussions with diverse stakeholders and sharing knowledge to strengthen team capability.

With excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset, you thrive in environments where continuous improvement, innovation and accountability are valued, and you take pride in delivering outcomes that make a genuine contribution to safety, performance and mission success.

  • Appropriate engineering experience in relatable technical roles
  • An excellent understanding of systems engineering or systems safety
  • Hold an accredited degree in engineering (under the Washington Accord)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Preferred experience in Defence industry
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team to achieve desired results
