Southern Launch is Australia's leading spaceport operator, building the sovereign capability required to get to space and back.
Headquartered in South Australia, Southern Launch operates two of the nation's leading commercial spaceports, the Koonibba Test Range and the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex. Providing orbital and suborbital launch, hypersonic flight, re-entries from space and range services, for commercial, civil and defence customers.
Through regulator-proven, vertically integrated mission services, Southern Launch's unique infrastructure enables direct ascent trajectories to a wide range of orbital inclination. While more than 47,000 square kilometres of secure, remote operating areas support advanced testing and recovery operations.
About the role
The Systems Engineer will provide the systems engineering discipline required to ensure Southern Launch’s launch ranges, infrastructure and mission systems are designed, developed and operated as an integrated capability.
Taking a whole-of-system approach, you will work across engineering disciplines to define requirements, develop system architectures, manage interfaces and ensure individual systems work together effectively. You will support the development of new capabilities, the integration of existing assets and the ongoing evolution of Southern Launch’s operating environment.
These roles will suit engineers who can move between technical detail and broader system-level thinking, ensuring engineering decisions remain aligned with operational needs, reliability and long-term capability development.
Responsibilities
- Develop, manage and maintain system requirements, specifications and technical baselines throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Translate operational and business needs into clear, measurable and verifiable engineering requirements.
- Develop system architectures that define the relationships, dependencies and interfaces between infrastructure, instrumentation, communications and mission systems.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities to ensure individual components and subsystems integrate into a cohesive operational capability.
- Identify, document and manage technical interfaces, dependencies, constraints and risks across interconnected systems.
- Assess proposed engineering changes to understand their implications for system performance, compatibility, reliability and operational requirements.
- Support concept development, design reviews, technical assessments and engineering trade-off studies to inform capability decisions.
- Develop and maintain system models, architecture diagrams, interface documentation, requirements registers and other engineering artefacts.
- Plan and coordinate integration, verification and validation activities to demonstrate that systems meet their defined requirements.
- Investigate technical issues and integration challenges, working with specialist engineers and suppliers to develop effective resolutions.
- Collaborate with project managers and infrastructure teams to align engineering deliverables with design, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning activities.
- Support the transition of completed systems into operations through technical acceptance, documentation, configuration management and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, electrical, electronic, mechatronic, aerospace, mechanical or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in systems engineering, systems integration or the development of complex multidisciplinary engineering capabilities.
- Experience developing engineering requirements, system architectures, interface specifications or technical documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and manage system dependencies, technical risks and integration challenges.
- Experience supporting engineering verification, validation, testing or technical assurance activities.
- Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work across multiple engineering disciplines.
Preferred skills and experience
- Experience in aerospace, defence, launch operations, telecommunications, industrial automation or other complex technical environments.
- Familiarity with systems engineering frameworks, requirements management tools and model-based systems engineering.
- Experience with systems integration involving networks, communications, sensors, telemetry, control systems or mission-critical infrastructure.
- Knowledge of configuration management, technical baselines, interface control and engineering change management.
- Experience with verification planning, validation strategies, acceptance criteria and lifecycle assurance.
- Familiarity with project delivery methodologies and the coordination of engineering activities across concurrent projects.
- Experience developing common engineering standards, reusable system architectures or scalable technical solutions.
Security clearance requirements
Applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). For more information about security clearance eligibility and the vetting process, visit the AGSVA website.
