Gympie Regional Council | Permanent Full-Time Opportunity. Lead our quarry operations. Put safety first. Help build the region's future.

Are you an experienced quarry or heavy industry professional ready to take the lead? Gympie Regional Council is seeking a motivated, safety-focused and proactive Supervisor of Quarry Operations to join our team on a permanent basis.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the day-to-day operations of Council's quarries and pits, ensuring the safe, efficient and cost-effective production and supply of quality materials to support Council's civil construction, maintenance and infrastructure projects.

Combining hands-on operational leadership with planning, coordination and continuous improvement, you will play a key role in ensuring our quarry operations deliver for Council and the wider community.

About the Role

Reporting to the relevant operational management, you will oversee quarry personnel, contractors, plant and equipment, extraction, crushing and screening, stockpiling, material quality, maintenance coordination and product dispatch.

Safety will be at the forefront of everything you do. You will support the Site Senior Executive (SSE) in meeting legislative, safety and environmental obligations across Council's quarries and pits, ensuring the effective implementation of the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) and associated operational procedures.

You will balance production targets, customer needs, material quality, plant utilisation and operational costs while maintaining a strong safety culture and ensuring risks are identified, controlled and regularly reviewed.

This role is ideal for a confident leader who can bring people together, make sound operational decisions and drive productivity without compromising safety.

What You’ll Be Responsible For
  • Safety and compliance: Lead safe quarry operations, implement and monitor the SHMS, identify hazards, manage risks and verify critical controls.
  • Operational leadership: Supervise and support employees and contractors, promote accountability and build a positive, cooperative team culture.
  • Production and performance: Coordinate extraction, crushing, screening, stockpiling and dispatch to meet operational requirements, customer expectations and material quality standards.
  • Plant and equipment: Coordinate inspections, defect reporting, maintenance and internal and external plant hire to maximise utilisation, availability and productivity.
  • Planning and resource management: Schedule personnel, plant and materials to support efficient operations and the timely delivery of Council projects.
  • Cost and commercial performance: Monitor production costs, plant utilisation, productivity and market trends to achieve value for money and strong financial outcomes for Council.
  • Reporting and continuous improvement: Maintain accurate production and operational records, report incidents and non-compliances, contribute to safety improvement initiatives and identify opportunities to improve systems and processes.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Work collaboratively with Council business units, maintenance teams, contractors, suppliers and customers to deliver responsive, high-quality service.
About You

You are a practical and solutions-focused leader who understands the demands of quarry operations and the importance of getting the job done safely, efficiently and right the first time.

You will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience supervising quarrying, extractive industry, crushing and screening, civil construction or comparable heavy industrial operations.
  • Extensive experience managing plant, equipment and materials used in the civil construction industry.
  • A strong understanding of production planning, materials handling, transport scheduling and resource allocation.
  • Knowledge of Queensland's mining and quarrying safety legislation and the ability to apply regulatory requirements in day-to-day operations.
  • Proven safety leadership skills, including hazard identification, risk assessment, incident reporting and verification of control measures.
  • The ability to lead a team, manage competing priorities and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Strong communication, planning, organisation and record-keeping skills, supported by intermediate computer literacy and confidence using handheld devices.
  • An understanding of contract management, plant hire, procurement and probity requirements.
  • A collaborative leadership style, a commitment to continuous improvement and the confidence to stop work and elevate issues when safety is at risk.
  • Flexibility to meet operational requirements, including variable work hours.

Above all, you will demonstrate personal accountability, professional integrity and a genuine commitment to a safe, respectful and high-performing workplace.

Mandatory Licences, Tickets and Competencies

To be considered for this position, you will need to hold and maintain:

  • A current Queensland Class C driver's licence.
  • Current front-end loader and excavator operator licences or required competencies.
  • Mining Supervisor competencies: G1, G8 and G9 (S1, S2 and S3).
  • Risk Facilitator competency: G2.
  • A current Construction Industry White Card (or applicable recognised equivalent).

You will also need to demonstrate the competence to undertake the responsibilities of a supervisor within the site's management structure, including the application of relevant Queensland mining and quarrying safety legislation.
