Job Summary

In charge of overseeing all on site geotechnical issues

Job Statement

Lead technical excellence. Develop a high-performing team. Make a meaningful impact on safe, reliable mining operations.

We’re seeking an experienced Superintendent Geotechnical – Operations to lead geotechnical performance across our underground and open pit operations. This is an opportunity for a respected technical professional and proven people leader to influence operational outcomes, strengthen ground control practices and develop a capable, engaged site-based geotechnical team.

Reporting to the Underground Manager, you’ll bring together technical expertise, sound judgement and strong leadership to ensure geotechnical risks are effectively managed and practical, fit-for-purpose advice is embedded in everyday mining decisions.

Working closely with site leadership and senior technical stakeholders, you’ll bridge geotechnical strategy and operational execution — providing the guidance, assurance and technical direction needed to support safe, efficient and sustainable mining.

About the Role

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who enjoys being close to the operation, tackling complex geotechnical challenges and empowering their team to deliver at a high standard.

You’ll take ownership of site geotechnical systems and risk management, influence mine design and planning decisions, and drive continuous improvement across monitoring, ground control and technical assurance. Just as importantly, you’ll set the standard for how the team works — building capability, encouraging accountability and creating an environment where people are supported to perform at their best.

Key Responsibilities
Geotechnical Leadership & Risk Management
  • Lead geotechnical support across underground and open pit operations, maintaining a strong focus on ground control and operational risk.
  • Ensure geotechnical management plans, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), monitoring programs and inspection regimes are effective and consistently applied.
  • Interpret ground performance and monitoring data to identify emerging risks, guide appropriate responses and escalation when required.
  • Provide technical oversight and assurance to strengthen risk controls and support safe mining practices.
Technical Expertise & Operational Influence
  • Provide authoritative, practical advice on mine design, ground support, excavation sequencing and slope stability.
  • Ensure geotechnical considerations are integrated into mine planning, scheduling and day-to-day operational decisions.
  • Oversee geotechnical monitoring systems, instrumentation, data integrity and technical reporting.
  • Review and approve designs and risk assessments within your delegated authority, and contribute to incident investigations and technical reviews.
People Leadership & Capability Development
  • Lead, coach and develop the site geotechnical team, building technical capability, confidence and accountability.
  • Establish clear expectations and foster a collaborative, field-focused team culture.
  • Support succession planning, knowledge sharing and the development of future geotechnical leaders.
  • Build strong relationships across operations, technical services and senior leadership to ensure geotechnical advice is understood and acted upon.
Planning, Assurance & Continuous Improvement
  • Contribute to mine planning, budgets, forecasts and resource allocation to ensure effective delivery of geotechnical services.
  • Coordinate specialist investigations, external consultants and independent technical assurance activities.
  • Drive improvements in geotechnical systems, reporting, workflows and risk management practices.
  • Translate technical findings into clear recommendations that support confident, informed decision-making.
About You

You’re a senior geotechnical professional who combines strong technical credentials with the ability to lead people, influence stakeholders and translate complex ground conditions into practical operational outcomes.

You’re comfortable challenging the status quo when needed, making considered risk-based decisions and working alongside operational leaders to find solutions. You understand that effective geotechnical leadership is about more than technical compliance — it’s about building trust, developing people and ensuring sound geotechnical practices are consistently applied in the field.

You’ll bring:
  • Tertiary qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Engineering Geology or a related discipline.
  • Significant geotechnical experience across both underground and open pit mining environments.
  • Strong technical expertise in ground control, rock mechanics, slope stability, monitoring and geotechnical risk management.
  • A demonstrated ability to integrate geotechnical advice into mine design, planning and operational execution.
  • Proven leadership experience, with a genuine commitment to coaching, mentoring and developing people.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to influence senior leaders and communicate complex technical issues clearly.
  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset, sound technical judgement and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A current C Class Manual Driver’s Licence.
Highly regarded:
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering, Rock Mechanics or a related discipline.
