Motion Recruitment seeks a hands-on Backend Engineer to own the technical roadmap, transforming an MVP into a resilient data hub. You will define core models, ingestion layers, and multi-region topology to onboard enterprise customers while meeting stringent security reviews.

You will lead architectural discussions, partner with ML for data pipelines, and drive scalable, high-throughput systems in a fast-moving startup environment in Sydney.

Our client is an early-stage ECG SaaS company tackling complex regulatory, sustainability, and transparency demands across global supply networks. Their platform unifies highly fragmented multi-tier supplier data into an authoritative, audit-ready single source of truth. By automating ingestion and verification, they eliminate manual overhead and allow international enterprise brands to meet mandatory cross-border compliance standards while unlocking significant operational efficiencies. Having proven traction with multinational enterprise customers in North America, they are establishing isolated European cloud regions to capture surging enterprise demand.

The Role & Architectural Challenge

As the primary Engineer, you will own the technical roadmap evolving a functional MVP into a resilient, high-throughput enterprise data hub designed to scale 50x over the next growth phase. This is a hands-on, builder-first technical leadership role (individual contributor, not people management). Working alongside the Engineering Lead, you will define the core domain data models, ingestion layers, security boundaries, and multi-region cloud topology required to onboard enterprise customers seamlessly and clear rigorous enterprise IT/security reviews.

Core Responsibilities

• Architectural Roadmap: Design and champion the technical vision to transition the platform from early-stage cloud functions into a robust, event-driven, containerised service architecture.
• Domain Data Modelling: Establish canonical data contracts and schemas (hierarchical BOMs, supplier entities, material properties, jurisdictional compliance obligations) serving as the platform's trusted baseline.
• High-Throughput Ingestion: Architect resilient ingestion pipelines capable of extracting, transforming, and standardising messy structured and unstructured inputs (enterprise APIs, flat files, document extractions, legacy ERP/PLM feeds).
• Multi-Region & Isolation Strategy: Implement isolated regional deployments (US and EU data residency) with strict tenant isolation, zero-trust network boundaries, and enterprise compliance posture (SOC 2 / ISO 27001 readiness).
• Data Lifecycle & Integrity: Establish schema migration, zero-downtime versioning, and dead-letter reprocessing strategies that ensure zero data loss across tenant migrations.
• ML & Backend Foundations: Collaborate with ML specialists to build scalable pipelines for model training data, automated feature evaluation, and inference monitoring.
• Enterprise Technical Voice: Lead deep-dive architectural discussions, data security workshops, and technical due diligence sessions with prospective enterprise IT and security stakeholders.
• 8+ years of senior-to-staff backend engineering, including extensive experience architecting data-heavy, multi-tenant B2B SaaS platforms.
• Deep Relational Database Expertise: Advanced PostgreSQL schema design, performance tuning, query optimisation, zero-downtime migrations, and Row-Level Security (RLS).
• Modern Backend Stack: Production mastery of TypeScript and Node.js within structured frameworks (e.g., NestJS or equivalent).
• Cloud Architecture & IaC: Comprehensive hands-on experience with AWS (ECS/Fargate, event queues, serverless, IAM/OIDC) provisioned via Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or AWS CDK).
• Data Systems: Proven history designing idempotent, asynchronous data processing pipelines, message brokers/queues, and schema validation layers.
• Enterprise Security Standards: Working knowledge of hardening cloud systems for SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 audits.
• Scale-up Track Record: Practical experience guiding early architecture from seed to scale within a fast-moving, high-growth startup or complex data-intensive domain (e.g., supply chain, logistics, fintech, or energy).
