Job summary

SAHMRI is seeking a Spectral micro-CT Research Scientist on a part-time 0.5 FTE fixed-term contract until June 2028. The role focuses on comparative imaging methods and development of spectral applications, working with a photon-counting CT physicist and imaging team.

You will design experiments, manage imaging protocols and data workflows, and contribute to publications while supporting research across Australia.

Qualifications

  • Higher Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or related field with CT methods focus.
  • Experience in preclinical imaging or micro-CT.
  • Strong mathematical and computational skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in medical imaging or CT methods.
  • Understanding of x-ray CT reconstruction and experimentation.
  • Experience with image processing, manipulation and analysis tools.

  • Experience with report/grant writing and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate spectral micro-CT equipment to research standard.
  • Support facility management and day-to-day imaging operations.
  • Provide expert micro-CT advice to researchers across Australia.
  • Support collaborations, publications and changes in practice.
  • Manage data workflows, processing pipelines and analysis outputs.
  • Develop new post-processing pipelines and reporting methods.
  • Lead research into new acquisition/analysis methods with vendors.
  • Report to project managers and scientific committees.
  • Contribute to funding applications and research activity reporting.
  • Represent SA node of the National Imaging Facility locally and nationally.

Job description

Part-Time (0.5FTE) | Fixed term contract until June 2028

At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.

The Clinical and Research Imaging Centre (CRIC) at SAHMRI is one of Australia’s most advanced imaging research facilities and home to the Australian Centre for Photon-Counting CT. The centre is equipped with a Siemens Naeotom Alpha clinical photon-counting CT system and will install a TESCAN preclinical micro-CT with photon-counting spectral detection in 2026.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a Spectral micro-CT Research Scientist to join an innovative imaging team supporting biomedical, material and plant science research. You will provide specialist expertise to academic, health and industry users across dynamic, spectral and structural micro-CT, contributing to experimental design, imaging protocols, data management, image processing and analysis workflows.

The role has a strong focus on comparative imaging methods and the development of new spectral applications. You will work closely with experienced research infrastructure specialists, vendor partners and a dedicated photon-counting CT physicist to support high-quality research outcomes.

This position is offered on a part-time basis at 0.5 FTE. There may be scope for the successful candidate to increase their hours within SAHMRI, subject to skills, experience and organisational needs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating TESCAN CoreTOM spectral micro-CT imaging equipment to research standard
  • Supporting facility management and day-to-day imaging operations
  • Providing expert micro-CT and imaging advice to researchers across Australia
  • Supporting research collaborations, publications and changes in practice
  • Managing research data workflows, processing pipelines and analysis outputs
  • Developing new post-processing pipelines and reporting methods
  • Leading research into new acquisition and analysis methods with Siemens and TESCAN
  • Reporting to project managers and scientific committees
  • Contributing to funding applications, publications and research activity reporting
  • Representing the SA node of the National Imaging Facility locally and nationally
About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • Higher Degree in relevant field that could include Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or similar field with focus on computed tomography methods, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in preclinical imaging or micro-CT
  • Strong mathematical and computational skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in medical imaging or computed tomography methods
  • Understanding of x-ray CT reconstruction and experimentation
  • Skills in image processing, manipulation and analysis tools
  • A track record supporting productive research and publications
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently under project timelines and budget requirements
  • Skills in report writing, grant writing and presentations
  • Motivation to learn, collaborate and contribute to shared research goals
  • Experience with machine learning software frameworks, clinical photon-counting CT or preclinical photon-counting CT will be highly regarded.
Special Requirements
  • Eligibility to operate closed system ionising imaging apparatus.
  • Some out of hours work may be required.
  • DCSI Employment Screening and Police Checks may be required.
