Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is seeking a Specialist Analyst, System Planning, to lead long‑term forecasting, modelling and planning insights shaping Australia's energy system. You’ll guide investment and policy decisions by turning complex analysis into practical outcomes and collaborating with government, industry and regulators.

You will mentor colleagues, drive methodological improvements, and contribute to high‑impact publications while supporting nationwide energy transition

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in economics, engineering, mathematics, physics or data analytics.
• 10–15+ years energy market experience in modelling, forecasting, system planning, economics or engineering.
• Strong understanding of energy markets, infrastructure planning and forecasting.
• Ability to analyse complex information and communicate insights clearly to diverse audiences.
• Experience leading technical projects and building stakeholder relationships.
• Collaborative mindset and commitment to high‑quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Lead forecasting, modelling and planning projects informing major energy system decisions.
• Contribute to nationally significant publications like the ISP and relevant reports.
• Translate complex analysis into clear insights for industry, government and regulators.
• Work across multidisciplinary teams to solve energy challenges.

About the role

As a Specialist Analyst, System Planning, you'll combine technical expertise with strategic thinking to help shape the future of Australia's energy system.

You’ll lead the development of long-term forecasts, modelling and planning insights that guide major investment and policy decisions, while working closely with colleagues and stakeholders to turn complex analysis into practical outcomes.

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence nationally significant decisions, contribute to Australia's energy transition, and share your expertise by mentoring and supporting others within a highly respected and collaborative team.

This role can be based in any Australian capital city.

What you will be doing

• Lead forecasting, modelling and planning projects that inform major energy system decisions.
• Contribute to nationally significant publications, including the Integrated System Plan and Inputs, Assumptions and Scenarios Report.
• Translate complex technical analysis into clear insights that support decision-making across industry, government and regulatory stakeholders.
• Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to solve emerging energy challenges.
• Foster capability development across the team by providing coaching, peer review and quality assurance support, helping colleagues deliver high-quality outcomes and grow their expertise.
• Drive innovation and continuous improvement in forecasting methodologies, modelling approaches and planning processes.
• Build trusted relationships across AEMO and the broader energy sector.
• Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to support capability development across the team.

What you will bring to the role

• Tertiary Qualifications in economics, engineering, mathematics, physics or data analytics related discipline.
• 10-15+ Years Energy market experience in modelling, forecasting, system planning, economics or engineering
• A strong understanding of energy markets, infrastructure planning, forecasting, or power system transformation.
• The ability to analyse complex information and communicate insights clearly to a range of audiences – drafting/writing public-facing reports.
• Experience leading technical projects and building strong stakeholder relationships.
• A collaborative mindset, sound judgement and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.
• Experience with tools such as Python, PLEXOS, Databricks, RStudio or Power BI will be highly regarded.
