AEMO, Australia's independent energy system and market operator, invites applications for a Specialist Market Modelling role within the Integrated Modelling team. You will lead long-term forecasts, modelling and planning insights shaping national energy decisions, partnering with colleagues and stakeholders to translate analysis into practical outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Experience in energy markets, forecasting, system planning or economics.
  • Ability to analyse complex information and communicate insights clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Experience leading technical projects and building stakeholder relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Lead forecasting, modelling and planning projects informing major energy system decisions.
  • Contribute to national publications like ISP and I&S reports.
  • Translate complex analysis into actionable insights for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to solve energy challenges.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to develop team capabilities.
  • Drive innovation in forecasting methodologies and planning processes.
  • Build trusted relationships across AEMO and the energy sector.

About The Team

About The Role

As a Specialist Market Modelling in the Integrated Modelling team in System Planning, you'll combine technical expertise with strategic thinking to help shape the future of Australia's energy system. You'll lead the development of long‑term forecasts, modelling and planning insights that guide major investment and policy decisions, while working closely with colleagues and stakeholders to turn complex analysis into practical outcomes.

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence nationally significant decisions, contribute to Australia's energy transition, and share your expertise by mentoring and supporting others within a highly respected and collaborative team.

This role can be based in any Australian capital city.
What You Will Be Doing
  • Lead forecasting, modelling and planning projects that inform major energy system decisions.
  • Contribute to nationally significant publications, including the Integrated System Plan (ISP) and Inputs, Assumptions and Scenarios Report.
  • Translate complex technical analysis into clear insights that support decision-making across industry, government and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to solve emerging energy challenges.
  • Foster capability development across the team by providing coaching, peer review and quality assurance support, helping colleagues deliver high‑quality outcomes and grow their expertise.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in forecasting methodologies, modelling approaches and planning processes.
  • Build trusted relationships across AEMO and the broader energy sector.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to support capability development across the team.
What You Will Bring To The Role
  • Tertiary Qualifications in economics, engineering, mathematics, physics or data analytics related discipline.
  • 10-15+ Years Energy market experience in modelling, forecasting, system planning, economics or engineering
  • A strong understanding of energy markets, infrastructure planning, forecasting, or power system transformation.
  • The ability to analyse complex information and communicate insights clearly to a range of audiences – drafting/writing public-facing reports.
  • Experience leading technical projects and building strong stakeholder relationships.
  • A collaborative mindset, sound judgement and a commitment to delivering high‑quality outcomes.
  • Experience with tools such as Python, PLEXOS, Databricks, RStudio or Power BI will be highly regarded.
