Qualifications

  • Demonstrated domain expertise in energy retail, whether specialised in a particular area or across the end-to-end customer lifecycle.
  • Proven experience in software engineering leadership with a strong, hands-on technical foundation.
  • Experienced in building scalable, resilient, and observable production systems.
  • A track record of building, managing and leading multiple engineering teams in an agile environment.
  • Experienced across the full development lifecycle: technical discovery, architectural design, prototyping, delivery, and operational monitoring.
  • A strong collaborator who thrives in team environments and enjoys working closely with others to deliver impactful features.
  • An advocate for test automation, continuous delivery, and modern agile practices — and keen to help others adopt them.
  • Motivated by owning products end-to-end — from shaping the early technical direction through to iterating based on real-world feedback.
  • Well-versed in modern engineering practices, continuous delivery principles, and optimising high-performance applications.
  • Curious and growth-oriented — always looking to deepen your expertise or explore new areas.
  • A bias to action and a 'can do' approach to problem solving in the face of uncertainty.
  • Familiarity with supporting clients in high-level solution design decisions and throughout complex integrations and migrations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the professional development of engineers through active mentoring, training, and career coaching
  • Build, manage and lead multiple high-performing engineering teams in an agile environment
  • Shape team ceremonies, drive good agile practices, and evolve how teams collaborate and deliver

  • Serve as a credible technical leader with hands-on involvement in architectural decision-making and trade-offs
  • Facilitate technical design across the full development lifecycle: from architectural design and rapid prototyping through to deployment and operational monitoring
  • Champion engineering best practices including test automation, continuous delivery, and modern agile practices — and drive adoption across teams
  • Coach your team to build and maintain scalable, resilient, and observable systems in production environments
  • Maintain and improve service reliability and performance, and participate in the on-call support rota to triage platform issues and respond to incidents
  • Create and deliver against the technical strategy for your team in partnership with other engineering leaders
  • Work within a team of senior leaders responsible for designing and evolving platform capabilities
  • Highlight client‑requested features and emerging trends to product and engineering teams to help shape the global platform

Job description

Job Title: Software Engineering Manager - Energy Retail

Location: (including hybrid): Melbourne, Australia

Salary: $180,000 - $200,000 + Superannuation

Reporting To: Head of Engineering

Kaluza reimagines energy to bring net-zero within everyone’s reach. Our intelligent Platform enables energy utilities to unlock the full value of a radically changing energy system and propel us to a future where renewable energy is sustainable, affordable and accessible for all.

From automating and simplifying core operations including billing to create a lower-cost, higher-engagement experience, to optimising energy usage across smart devices in the home, we turn tough challenges into win-win-win outcomes for customers, suppliers and the energy system.

We champion a flexible, hybrid work approach and we find that teams often benefit from coming together in the office at least 3 days a week to foster connection and accelerate progress.

Outside of these collaborative opportunities, we aim to be as flexible as possible to balance work with life. As a company we come together annually for our conference and end of year celebrations!

Our goal is to build a self-sufficient and empowered team here on the ground in Australia. We’re well on our way, but until we get there we still have some reliances on our UK team. Being comfortable working flexibly for a portion of your working week to cover time zones is required.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

You’ll be joining the Kaluza Technology community — a large team of both data-led and product-focused Software and Production Engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness and ensure best practices across the community.

You’ll be working on Kaluza's Energy Retail platform — a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. Built with scale and technical quality in mind, it is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza's customers.

Here at Kaluza we are 100% committed to providing a reliable platform for our clients. As part of that commitment, our engineering ownership model is "you build it, you own it." Our engineering teams have a high sense of ownership and support their critical services both in and out of normal working hours. After hours support is assigned according to a paid roster.
