Kraken Engineering in Melbourne is hiring for Engineer I and Engineer II roles to build backend systems powering energy solutions. You will write robust Python/Django code, work with GraphQL, Celery and PostgreSQL, and collaborate in an agile, growth-minded team.

Where you'll fit in:

Kraken’s technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 1,400 people globally, which includes server-side, client-side, and mobile engineers. We follow an agile way of working, where individual teams are given the freedom to choose the tools that are most appropriate for managing their work.

Kraken is a great place to learn, work with talented engineers and level-up your skills. Some of our coding conventions are open-source.

Engineer I roles (usually 1-3 years exp) are only available hybrid from Melbourne

Engineer II roles (usually 4-8 years exp) are available remotely within Australia or hybrid from Melbourne.

Our technology

Our backend developers use Python. Most of our websites are powered by Django and GraphQL (Graphene). Our CircleCI CI/CD pipeline runs tens of thousands of tests, deploying into AWS EKS defined by Terraform over 100 times per day and observed with tools like Sentry and Datadog. This allows us to move fast and at scale, without compromising reliability. Teams work differently but the commitment to quality is the same.

Developers at Kraken are empowered to use cutting-edge AI tools and models. Any generated code is still owned by a human.

What we do

Kraken Engineering has multiple disciplinary groups with their own management structures and teams working together to create a unified Kraken that can be deployed to any territory in the world to achieve clients’ goals.

Client Engineering is the development arm responsible for making sure our clients receive the best possible experience and their needs are met with high quality solutions.

What you'll own:

We are currently hiring at both the Engineer I and Engineer II levels.

Eng I candidates are earlier in their backend careers. You will have more structured support and guidance as you build confidence, learn our large codebase and develop your technical career.

Eng II candidates should already be coding at a strong technical level similar to a senior engineer, but will still receive support for broader architectural complexity, cross-domain challenges and continued career growth.

We hire Engineers who have the skills and drive to keep growing. In this role, you will:

For Eng II candidates, you will additionally:

• Feature Ownership & Observability: Confidently own and deliver medium-sized engineering problems, address system observability gaps, and manage technical escalations independently.

• Mentorship & Leadership: Mentor junior engineers, assist with onboarding new team members, and participate in hiring debriefs to help grow the engineering team.

• Cross-Domain Collaboration: Work confidently across domains to explain technical work, promote best engineering practices (performance, security, testability), and help brainstorm solutions.
