The Opportunity

The Senior Water Engineer – Surface Water will provide technical leadership and delivery oversight for surface water management systems across MinRes's iron ore and lithium operations and projects. Reporting to the Principal Surface Water Engineer, this role is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering surface water studies, wet-season readiness assessments, flood protection studies, and operational performance checks across assigned sites.

As a Senior Hydrologist/Surface Water Engineer within the team, you will lead hydrological analysis, including RORB rainfall-runoff modelling, hydrological and hydraulic model calibration, closure PMP/PMF estimation and climate change assessment. You will communicate flood and surface water risks clearly to site, mine planning and project study teams.

You will ensure that surface water engineering scopes provide key input into the detailed design of operable solutions, aligned with mine plans, approvals, and water strategies.

While primarily based at Osborne Park, you will undertake regular site visits to support technical discussions, wet season readiness, and project reviews. Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and delivery of surface water engineering scopes across assigned sites.

  • Translate Life of Mine, five-year, two-year, and operational plans into concept designs and work packages.

  • Analyse monitoring data and provide technical input on rainfall events, catchment response, and system performance.

  • Ensure surface water systems are fit for purpose, cost-effective, and aligned with operational requirements.

  • Drive annual wet-season preparedness plans, including pre-wet works, contingency measures, and post-event reviews.

  • Provide operational support to site teams, including performance issues, flood protection reviews, inspections, audits, and defect resolution.

  • Work closely with Hydrogeology, Mine Planning, and Approvals teams to ensure integrated surface water outcomes.

  • Manage consultants and contractors to deliver quality, schedule, and value-for-money outcomes.

  • Lead flood and hydrological assessments, including calibration and validation of hydrological and hydraulic models against monitoring data.

  • Estimate closure PMP/PMF and incorporate climate change projections into design rainfall and flood risk assessments.

  • What is required?

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil, Water, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in hydrology and flood estimation, including RORB (or similar) modelling, model calibration, PMP/PMF estimation and climate change assessment, ideally in a mining, closure or resources context.

  • Extensive surface water engineering experience, ideally within WA’s mining and resources sector.

  • Strong expertise in surface water modelling, flood studies, drainage design, and water management systems.

  • Proven ability to turn operational plans into engineering designs and work packages.

  • Experience in wet season planning, flood risk assessment, and post-event reviews.

  • Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and manage consultants and contractors to deliver quality outcomes.
