Job summary

Australian Locating Services, based in Greater Sydney, seeks an experienced Utility Locator for field-based work across civil, infrastructure, council, commercial and residential projects in NSW. You will locate services using electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR, interpret plans, and deliver clear client-focused findings.

The role requires independent work, safety commitment, and effective communication with clients and site teams.

Qualifications

• Current CERTLOC certification is required.
• Proficient with electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR.
• Ability to interpret BYDA plans and assess site conditions.
• Construction White Card and a valid driver’s licence are required.

Responsibilities

• Locate and identify underground services using electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR.
• Interpret BYDA plans, construction drawings and available service information alongside site evidence.
• Mark services clearly and professionally, communicating findings and limitations to clients and site crews.
• Prepare accurate field notes, photographs, sketches and reporting information.
• Work alongside surveyors and other team members on utility mapping and larger multidisciplinary projects.

Job description

Australian Locating Services has provided specialist utility locating and investigation services for more than 30 years. Our capabilities include utility locating, GPR, concrete scanning, CCTV, NDD, leak detection, utility mapping and surveying.

We work across civil, infrastructure, council, commercial and residential projects throughout Greater Sydney and NSW. Our team takes pride in accurate work, practical problem-solving and helping clients make informed decisions about underground services.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Utility Locator to join our Greater Sydney team.

This is a dedicated field-based locating role, supported by experienced managers, a capable office team and colleagues across locating and surveying. You’ll take responsibility for your fieldwork, communicate findings clearly and contribute your technical expertise to a variety of projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Locate and identify underground services using electromagnetic locating equipment and ground penetrating radar.
• Interpret BYDA plans, construction drawings and available service information alongside site evidence.
• Mark services clearly and professionally, communicating findings and limitations to clients and site crews.
• Prepare accurate field notes, photographs, sketches and reporting information.
• Work alongside surveyors and other team members on utility mapping, NDD and larger multidisciplinary projects.

Key Requirements

• Current CERTLOC certification.
• Practical proficiency with electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR.
• A solid understanding of AS5488 and utility quality levels.
• Ability to interpret BYDA plans and assess site conditions.
• Construction White Card.
• Current driver’s licence.

Concrete scanning, utility mapping, CCTV or NDD experience will be highly regarded, along with relevant tickets such as RIW, WPCG, ESI, Workers on Foot, confined space and gas testing.
