Job summary

Megavar is seeking a Senior Testing and Commissioning Engineer to lead HV testing and commissioning across transmission, distribution, BESS and renewables projects in Australia. The role involves running on-site test teams, ensuring commissioning programs reach energisation, and collaborating with design teams and clients.

You will mentor less experienced engineers, maintain rigorous documentation, and travel to project sites across the country.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in electrical or power engineering.
• Minimum 5 years’ hands-on HV commissioning experience.
• Experience leading commissioning on transmission or renewables projects; knowledge of Australian standards.
• Proficiency with secondary injection test sets; Omicron experience preferred.
• Willingness to travel across Australia and work at project sites.

Responsibilities

• Lead primary and secondary commissioning of HV substations across Australia.
• Test and validate protection, control and SCADA systems.
• Manage on-site testing teams and end-to-end commissioning programs.
• Prepare commissioning documentation: test plans, records, ITPs, reports.
• Mentor junior commissioning engineers.

Senior Testing and Commissioning Engineer

Location: Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide or Newcastle (with project travel across Australia)

Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering testing and commissioning, primary and secondary design, and substation maintenance for network businesses, generators and renewable energy developers across Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. We’re looking for a Senior Testing and Commissioning Engineer to lead primary and secondary commissioning on transmission and distribution substations, BESS and renewable energy projects across Australia, running test teams on site and taking commissioning programs through to energisation.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Primary and secondary commissioning of transmission and distribution substations, BESS and renewable energy projects across Australia.
• Testing and validating protection, control and SCADA systems against design specifications, Australian standards and client requirements, predominantly using Omicron test equipment.
• Leading test teams on site and managing commissioning programs end to end.
• Fault-finding and resolving technical issues during commissioning, and working with design teams and clients to close them out.
• Preparing and reviewing commissioning documentation: test plans, test records, ITPs and commissioning reports.
• Liaising directly with clients, contractors and network operators on technical issues and problem resolution.
• Mentoring less experienced commissioning engineers.

What We’re Looking For

• A degree or diploma in electrical or power engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years’ hands‑on experience commissioning HV electrical systems: substations, protection and control, renewables or BESS.
• Demonstrated experience leading commissioning on transmission or renewable energy projects.
• A strong understanding of protection and control systems, power systems and the relevant Australian standards.
• Proficiency with secondary injection test sets and diagnostic equipment. Omicron experience is well regarded.
• Willingness to travel and work at project sites across Australia.
• The discipline to keep test records, documentation and deadlines tight on client‑facing work.
