Job description

Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.

The role is a senior network security expert responsible for designing, governing, and managing secure network architectures and platforms, while ensuring compliance with security standards and best practices. It involves close collaboration with engineering, cyber security, and operations teams to design and approve secure solutions such as firewalls, segmentation, and encryption technologies. The position also drives security improvements, provides technical leadership and mentorship, and supports risk assessment, incident response, and continuous enhancement of network security.

Your day to day will consist of
  • Lead PIR and rep CSE across all problem management related engagements
  • Design, implement, and maintain firewall solutions using Fortinet (FW, Proxy, VPN) and Check Point platforms
  • Provide Tier‑3 technical support to resolve complex and critical network security incidents
  • Translate business, security, and network requirements into scalable and secure firewall designs
  • Deliver firewall migrations, upgrades, policy optimisation, and high‑availability implementations
  • Apply routing and switching knowledge to interpret network architectures and security traffic flows
  • Work closely with Network, Cyber Security, and Operations teams to ensure secure end‑to‑end designs
  • Perform security assessments, troubleshooting, and root‑cause analysis for firewall and VPN services
  • Contribute basic scripting and automation to improve operational efficiency and repeatability
  • Ensure designs align with security standards, best practices, and lifecycle (EOL/EOS) requirements
What makes you perfect for the role
  • Degree in Telecommunications Engineering (or related field) or equivalent experience
  • At least 8 years’ experience in telecommunications or large enterprise environments, with strong expertise in Fortinet and Checkpoint
  • Solid understanding of operational processes, fault management, and diagnosing customer issues
  • Proven ability to manage major faults across multiple platforms and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders (up to GM level)
  • Experience in testing/PoC environments, including understanding methodologies and platform limitations
  • Background in large-scale network design and implementation, with scripting skills (e.g., Python, Perl) as an advantage
