Job summary

Optus is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support regulatory platforms with strong stakeholder engagement. You will help deliver end‑to‑end solutions through the full tech lifecycle, from development to operations, ensuring secure, reliable systems.

The role emphasizes government collaboration, on-prem workloads, and modern engineering practices, with an option for flexible hybrid work. You will be deeply involved in Linux-based infrastructure, virtualization (Proxmox), and container

Qualifications

• Australian citizen eligible for Australian Government security clearance.
• Experience in full stack, end-to-end systems design and engineering.
• Strong Linux experience essential; virtualization and container tooling required.
• On-premises design patterns using Terraform, Ansible, Packer, etc.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will have a high level of technical expertise to support Optus in meeting a range of regulatory obligations. The role also requires strong stakeholder management skills, as the Senior Systems Engineer will regularly meet with representatives from government agencies, vendors and internal teams.

You will be responsible for supporting innovative technical solutions to address customer requirements and government initiatives through the solution’s life cycle.

The Day to Day

• Assist team members in delivering end-to-end solutions across the technology lifecycle, from development through to operations
• Contribute to highly available, secure, and scalable systems, maintaining reliability of critical regulatory platforms
• Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders, including government and law enforcement agencies, to support solution delivery and operations
• Participate in security risk assessments and help maintain security architecture in regulated environments
• Support continuous improvement through modern engineering practices, automation, and evolving technologies.

What You Bring

• Due to the nature of this role, you must be an Australian Citizen who holds (or be eligible to obtain) an Australian Government security clearance
• Experience in full stack, end to end, systems design and engineering, including infrastructure build and operate
• Strong Linux experience is essential
• Virtualization (Proxmox) and Kubernetes (Rancher) experience
• Software development using:
  • Go (essential)
  • Rust (familiarity, desire to develop the skillset is essential)
  • Python (desired, not essential)
  • Gitlab CICD and SDLC
• Experience leveraging modern cloud native designs, tooling and patterns in an entirely on-premises environment. E.g. Terraform, Ansible, Packer etc
• Datacenter experience including the installation and maintenance of server, network and storage equipment
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science/Engineering; cybersecurity certifications are an advantage
