Job summary

Guardian Australia is seeking a senior supporter editor to join our editorial team in Sydney for a 12-month fixed-term contract. You will lead messaging that deepens audience relationships and expands our paying supporter base across platforms.

You will write compelling fundraising copy, oversee email campaigns, and collaborate with reporters, editors and global teams to apply data-driven strategies that balance editorial integrity with revenue goals.

Qualifications

• At least five years of newsroom or editorial experience, ideally with audience development, membership models, or not-for-profit fundraising.
• Familiarity with Guardian's mission, voice, and business model.
• Experience designing cross-platform message testing and optimisation programs.
• Strong knowledge of Australian media landscape and politics.
• Experience managing projects and meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Write compelling subscriber/supporter fundraising messages across on- and off-platform channels connected to news cycles.
• Oversee Guardian Australia's email fundraising efforts.
• Commission and edit fundraising and supporter engagement copy from reporters and editors.
• Review copy to reflect Guardian voice and values.
• Identify opportunities to motivate reader support around breaking news or major projects.
• Concept and run campaigns, including year-end fundraising initiatives.
• Collaborate with UK/US teams to leverage global campaigns for Australia.
• Oversee and craft a messaging testing program and analyse conversion metrics.
• Author a weekly supporter-focused newsletter to build trust.
• Highlight journalism to supporters and explain newsroom projects.
• Develop messaging testing across digital channels and derive data-driven insights.
• Maintain Guardian tone of voice in audience-facing messaging.
• Work with editorial colleagues to deliver journalism that supports supporter strategy.
• Partner with digital, marketing, UX, design, commercial, data teams to drive revenue.
