Job summary

Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the design, deployment, and operation of a Gen3-based research data platform for the AllClear program on Google Cloud Platform. You will work with cross-functional teams to enable secure access to single-cell omics and clinical data for researchers.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Excellent working knowledge of Python and Bash.
• Strong experience with TypeScript, React, and Next.js.
• GCP deployment and security knowledge, IAM and cost awareness.
• Experience with Kubernetes deployments including Helm.
• IaC using Terraform/OpenTofu.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and data modeling.
• Gnu/Linux server/cloud administration.
• Git and GitHub in team settings with clean history.
• Ability to plan implementations and drive execution.
• Strong English communication with non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience with Gen3 or similar data commons and single-cell omics workflows.
• Knowledge of genomics standards and bioinformatics tools.

Responsibilities

• Lead deployment, customization, and operation of a Gen3-based research data platform on GCP.
• Coordinate data curation and ETL workflows for single-cell omics and clinical data.
• Design integrations between Gen3 and analysis/visualisation tools.
• Contribute architecture plans, seek team review, and drive execution.
• Perform DevOps tasks: Kubernetes via Helm, IaC with Terraform/OpenTofu, CI/CD.
• Engage stakeholders to translate data/workflow needs into technical requirements.
• Contribute to developer tooling, practices, and automations.
• Mentor team members and share expertise across the DSP.
• Contribute code/features to open-source data-platform and bioinformatics tools.
