Job summary

Southern Cross Grammar in Caroline Springs, VIC, invites applications for a part-time Senior Science Laboratory Technician. This 0.6–0.8 FTE role supports practical science learning and operates our facilities with a strong focus on safety and precision.

You will prepare equipment and chemical solutions, advise teachers on requirements, coordinate stock and safety records, and maintain laboratory systems including 3D printers and robotics kits. The position commences in Term 1, 2027.

Qualifications

• Diploma or certificate in laboratory skills.
• Strong knowledge of lab practices and materials.
• Understanding chemical and biological safety and disposal.
• Ability to prioritise tasks and prepare resources.
• Current Working with Children Check.
• First Aid, CPR, asthma/anaphylaxis certificates or willingness to obtain them.

Responsibilities

• Preparing and setting up equipment, chemical solutions, specimens and materials for practical classes and demonstrations.
• Trialling experiments and advising teachers on technical requirements, equipment use and safety considerations.
• Supporting teachers and students during practical activities.
• Coordinating the ordering, storage, labelling and stocktaking of chemicals, equipment and scientific resources.
• Maintaining safety data sheets, chemical registers and risk assessments, and supporting safe handling and disposal of laboratory waste.
• Maintaining, calibrating and troubleshooting laboratory, STEM and engineering equipment.
• Managing laboratory records and purchasing, and contributing to budget planning.
• Supporting STEM resources, including 3D printers, a laser cutter, robotics kits and specialist equipment.

This ongoing, part-time role commences in Term 1, 2027, with a time fraction of 0.6–0.8 FTE to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

About you

You will bring sound scientific knowledge, attention to safety and an organised approach to supporting a busy teaching program. You will communicate clearly, anticipate practical requirements and work effectively both independently and alongside colleagues.

You will have:

• A diploma or certificate in laboratory skills, or another qualification relevant to the role.
• Strong knowledge of scientific procedures, laboratory practices and materials used in school science programs.
• Demonstrated understanding of chemical and biological safety, including safe storage, handling and disposal.
• The ability to prioritise competing tasks and prepare resources accurately and on time.
• Confidence maintaining scientific equipment and learning to operate new technologies.
• Current Working with Children Check.
• Current Level 2 First Aid, CPR, asthma and anaphylaxis certificates, or a willingness to obtain these.
