The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) in Armidale, NSW, seeks a Senior Risk Manager to lead risk assessment for veterinary chemicals, oversee registration, variation and permit applications, and ensure compliance with legislative timeframes.

You will apply scientific expertise in product safety, efficacy and labelling, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, and contribute to regulatory decision-making while supporting team development.

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria include expertise in veterinary medicine, pharmacology and therapeutics, zoology, biology, animal science, physiology, medicines development/manufacture or chemical regulation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulation of veterinary chemicals, including pre-market registration and permits in Australia.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to provide pragmatic advice on complex scientific information.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise and meet timeframes with accuracy.
  • Effective oral and written communication, and ability to build relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate workflow of registration, variation and permit applications to evaluate safety, efficacy, trade impact and labelling.
  • Apply risk assessment methods to regulatory decisions within legislative timeframes.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders; consider public health, work health and safety, animal safety, efficacy and environmental safety.
  • Ensure scientifically robust outputs meeting APVMA and legislative requirements.

Position summary

Do you get excited about applying robust risk assessment methods to evaluate product safety, efficacy, environmental impact, and trade implications, incorporating critical risk mitigation measures into product labelling? Are you a looking to broaden your technical expertise in regulatory science?

Working within established legislative and policy frameworks, the Senior Risk Manager will apply expertise and technical knowledge within the Veterinary Medicines 2 team to manage/coordinate the workflow of registration, variation or permit applications to evaluate the safety, efficacy, trade impact and labelling, as relevant, of regulated veterinary chemical products within legislative timeframes. In undertaking this role, you will work on applications of varying complexity, be required to liaise and consult with internal and external stakeholders, and take the risks and requirements of public health, work health and safety, animal safety, efficacy, trade risks and environmental safety into consideration.

Working collaboratively with APVMA staff, the Senior Risk Manager is required to manage the workflow of their applications to ensure they are scientifically robust and meet both APVMA and legislative requirements and timeframes.

To be considered for this role you will need the following essential criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or demonstrated work experience in a relevant scientific discipline such as veterinary medicine, pharmacology and therapeutics, zoology, biology, animal science, physiology, medicines development/ manufacture or chemical regulation.
  • A well-developed working knowledge of, or ability to quickly develop, the regulation of veterinary chemicals, specifically the pre-market registration and/or approval of permits of veterinary medicines in Australia.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate and provide pragmatic advice on complex scientific information.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise a complex workload, based on importance and urgency while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and meeting timeframes.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and confidently, develop and support complex relationships, and represent the Authority in a variety of forums.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team and train other team members as required.

The following desirable criteria will also be assessed:

  • Demonstrated work experience in research, development, manufacture and/or regulation of (veterinary) immunobiologicals.
