AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission and distribution connection projects.

About the Team

Our Onboarding and Connections Team are at the forefront of energy industry transformation. We collaborate with generation developers, Network Service Providers (NSPs), and government agencies to drive project delivery, accelerate connections, and provide expert advisory services on system impact and critical issue resolution.

About the role

As Senior Project Manager, you will manage a portfolio of diverse connections projects, providing rigorous project management from initial coordination to completion. You will mentor junior staff, build relationships with stakeholders across NSPs, developers, and government, and contribute to improvement initiatives for processes, systems, and tools within AEMO.

What you will be doing

  • Prepare well structured reports for external stakeholders, including government agencies, that clearly communicate project status, key challenges, and timelines.
  • Lead and manage a diverse portfolio of energy connection projects, ensuring quality, cost, risk, and timelines are achieved.
  • Develop structured project management frameworks and oversee detailed scheduling, resource planning, and reporting.
  • Develop technical expertise in the connections process by working closely with engineers and subject matter experts to ensure the role is delivered effectively.
  • Drive proactive stakeholder engagement, clearly communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Represent AEMO at workshops and project steering committees with government agencies, NSPs, and industry leaders.
  • Champion agile problem-solving to address unique project and stakeholder challenges efficiently.
  • Mentor and coach junior project management staff, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team culture.

What you will bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualification in project management, engineering, or related discipline.
  • Recognised project management certification highly regarded.
  • Proven experience delivering energy or utility sector projects (3–5 years) – essential.
  • Knowledge of generator grid connection processes highly regarded.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Expertise in project scheduling, resource planning, and risk management.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and foster collaboration.
  • Advanced proficiency with project management and CRM software, including data analysis capabilities.
