Job summary

Worley is seeking an experienced Project Engineer – Instrumentation & Control to lead brownfield projects in Portland, Victoria. You will design, develop, and deliver PLC-based control systems and oversee delivery from concept through commissioning.

You will mentor engineers, manage stakeholders, and ensure safety, quality and regulatory compliance while supporting proposals and site testing.

Qualifications

  • Projected engineering experience in instrumentation and control for brownfield environments.
  • Strong capability in leading design, development and delivery of I&C systems.
  • Experience delivering projects in industrial processing facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development and delivery of instrumentation and control systems, with PLC-based control systems experience.
  • Provide technical and project leadership across brownfield upgrade projects.
  • Develop execution strategies, scope, cost estimates and technical submissions.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers and contractors.
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee engineering activities to meet time, budget and quality targets.
  • Mentor engineers and designers, guiding technical capability development.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and review specifications, data sheets, calculations and bid evaluations.
  • Contribute to project planning, risk management, cost control and schedule performance.
  • Provide technical support during construction, commissioning and operations.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer – Instrumentation & Control to lead and deliver complex brownfield projects within industrial process environments. This role combines strong technical capability with project leadership, stakeholder management, and commercial awareness.

You will play a key role in driving project execution from concept through to commissioning, ensuring safe, compliant, and high‑quality outcomes for our clients.

This position is based onsite at Portland, Victoria.

You Will Be Responsible For
  • Leading the design, development, and delivery of instrumentation and control systems, with strong expertise in PLC‑based control systems (Rockwell preferred).
  • Providing technical and project leadership across brownfield upgrade and modification projects.
  • Developing project execution strategies, scope definitions, cost estimates, and technical submissions to support proposals and business development activities.
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, and contractors to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Planning, coordinating, and overseeing engineering activities to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
  • Mentoring and supporting engineers and designers, providing technical guidance and fostering capability development.
  • Ensuring all engineering deliverables comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Preparing and reviewing engineering documentation including specifications, data sheets, calculations, and technical bid evaluations.
  • Contributing to project planning, risk management, cost control, and schedule performance.
  • Providing technical support during construction, commissioning, and operational phases, including site collaboration where required.
What You’ll Bring To The Role
  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Strong experience in instrumentation design and integration with PLC control systems, particularly in brownfield environments.
  • Proven experience delivering projects within industrial process facilities.
  • Experience in aluminium smelting operations is advantageous but not essential.
  • Familiarity with Rockwell control systems highly regarded.
  • Site‑based project experience and commissioning exposure will be highly valued.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering scopes and manage multiple stakeholders across project lifecycles.
