Job description

A highly skilled and experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer is being sought for an exciting opportunity involving the design and development of high-voltage (HV) substations and renewable energy projects. This includes work on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), solar farms, and wind farms. The successful candidate will leverage their technical expertise to deliver innovative and efficient solutions, all while ensuring adherence to industry standards and meeting project-specific requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Developing conceptual and detailed designs for HV substations for major utilities and renewable energy projects.
  • Crafting design specifications and working closely with management to resolve design issues.
  • Planning and executing professional engineering tasks.
  • Conducting site visits to suppliers, customers, or project sites to confirm technical and project requirements.
  • Designing substation configurations, including busbar layouts such as single, double, and 1.5 CB schemes.
  • Creating plant layouts, sections, and details, including busbars, connections, and gantry force analysis.
  • Ensuring designs adhere to safety, fire, transportation, and maintenance clearances and layouts.
  • Designing underground services such as trenches, conduits, and cable routes.
  • Performing earthing design, conducting soil/grid testing, and analyzing current splits.
  • Designing HV cables, lightning protection systems, and providing studies for EMF, corona effects, and lighting.
  • Preparing specifications and technical details for HV equipment and buildings.
  • Conducting insulation coordination, including selecting surge arresters and insulation materials.
  • Applying knowledge of BESS, solar, and wind farm requirements to meet project demands.
  • Supporting activities such as system planning, fault calculations, power quality analysis, and harmonics studies.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering (Bachelor's level).
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in substation design and/or primary design of HV plants at a senior level.
  • Strong understanding of primary design principles.
  • Expertise in substation design and utility grid connections.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical distribution design and Australian standards.
  • High-level communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Technical proficiency in HV cable design, earthing design, and lightning protection.
  • Familiarity with insulation coordination, EMF, and lighting design principles.
  • Strong expertise in design software such as Cymcap, EMTP, and CDEGS.
  • Solid understanding of HV and solar farm equipment specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of secondary design aspects for HV plants, solar, and wind farms.
  • Familiarity with civil/structural interface requirements for HV substations.
  • Chartered status (e.g., PREV, RPEQ, NER, CPEng) is highly desirable.
Day-to-Day
  • Collaborating with project teams to develop and refine HV substation designs.
  • Conducting site visits to assess requirements and ensure alignment with design expectations.
  • Using advanced design software to produce detailed layouts, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Engaging with stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, and internal teams, to solve design challenges and ensure project success.
  • Performing technical analyses on fault calculations, insulation coordination, and earthing systems.
  • Preparing specifications and reports as part of project deliverables.
  • Staying abreast of industry standards and emerging technologies to continually improve design practices.
