Job summary

Department of Primary Industries, Queensland invites applications for a Principal Policy Officer in the National Fire Ant Eradication Program. Based in Brisbane, you will lead complex policy and regulatory work, translating legislation and operational issues into practical solutions and providing high‑quality advice to senior leaders.

You will work with operational teams, technical specialists and partner agencies to influence policy, manage risks, and ensure delivery of government priorities

Responsibilities

• Lead policy research and analysis to translate regulatory, legislative and operational issues into evidence-based recommendations and practical solutions.
• Develop and review legislation, policies, procedures and operational guidance that strengthen governance, compliance and program delivery.
• Produce executive and government documentation: briefs, Cabinet submissions, drafting instructions, consultation papers, regulatory impact statements and presentations.
• Influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including operational teams, technical specialists, partner agencies and senior leaders, to develop workable policy solutions and achieve government priorities.
• Provide senior policy leadership, guiding policy direction, coaching team members and ensuring key commitments under the National Fire Ant Eradication Response Plan are delivered.
• Identify and manage policy, regulatory and program risks, developing appropriate controls and solutions to support sound governance and informed decision-making.
• Drive continuous improvement, using consultation, evidence and operational feedback to improve policies and procedures and business processes.
