Description
Australia's cloud infrastructure is expanding at pace, and the demand for reliable, cost-effective power has never been greater. As an Energy Strategy Manager in AWS's APAC Energy team, you'll be at the center of this growth, leading the connection of data centers to the electricity grid in Melbourne and navigating one of the most dynamic energy markets in the world.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain, and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
In this role, you'll work with utilities, regulators, and local authorities to deliver high-voltage transmission and substation infrastructure on time, on budget, and to specification. You'll manage grid compliance across a growing portfolio of sites, structure and negotiate energy contracts, and develop strategies that keep pace with Australia's evolving regulatory landscape as the grid decarbonizes and decentralizes.
This role offers the opportunity to shape how AWS connects to the Australian grid at scale, balancing rapid infrastructure expansion with technical compliance and long-term energy strategy. If you're energized by the intersection of energy infrastructure and technology and want to work on problems that directly enable the next generation of cloud services, we'd like to hear from you.
This role is based in Melbourne. 10% travel may be required.
Key job responsibilities
- Serve as the single-threaded owner for grid connection delivery across AWS data centers in Melbourne, from initial due diligence through energization, directly enabling cloud capacity growth.
- Lead relationships with transmission network service providers (TNSPs), distribution network service providers (DNSPs), and regulators to secure grid capacity and negotiate connection agreements that meet AWS timelines.
- Coordinate across internal teams (Planning, Real Estate, Design, Procurement, Construction, Operations, Finance, and Commissioning) to align power infrastructure delivery with broader site schedules, resolving dependencies and removing blockers.
- Conduct power due diligence for new data center sites, assessing grid capacity, connection feasibility, redundancy requirements, and long-term supply reliability.
- Develop and negotiate utility contracts, energy services agreements (ESAs), and connection agreements, ensuring commercial terms align with AWS standards and regional market conditions.
- Own technical grid compliance across the portfolio, ensuring all connections meet National Electricity Rules (NER), grid codes, and relevant Australian standards.
- Interface with government bodies, market operators (AEMO), and regulatory authorities to obtain approvals, influence policy development, and ensure AWS infrastructure expansion objectives are supported.
- Manage capital budgets for power infrastructure delivery, tracking expenditure against forecasts and identifying cost optimization opportunities.
- Develop strategies to reduce energy costs and improve supply resilience, including assessment of emerging grid technologies, tariff structures, and alternative supply arrangements.
A day in the life
Your morning might start with a call to a network service provider, working through connection application timelines or resolving a technical query with the design engineering team for a new substation. By midday, you're reviewing grid compliance documentation with the design team, ensuring submissions to AEMO align with National Electricity Rules. In the afternoon, you could be negotiating commercial terms on an energy services agreement or presenting a capital expenditure forecast to finance stakeholders.
You'll manage multiple concurrent projects at different stages of delivery, from early-stage site due diligence through to energization. No two days look the same, but the thread that connects them is ensuring AWS has the grid capacity it needs, when it needs it, to support growth across Melbourne.
About the team
The APAC Energy & Water team is a multi-disciplinary group covering energy, water, energy procurement, carbon free energy, and strategic partnerships, all working to keep AWS data centers powered, cooled, and connected across the region. This role sits within the energy function, where you'll be part of a team that thrives on solving complex infrastructure problems, building strong utility relationships, and finding creative ways to bring power to some of the most ambitious projects in the country. We work hard, we back each other, and we genuinely enjoy what we do.
Diverse Experiences
AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn't followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don't let it stop you from applying.

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
- 6+ years of solving problems with technology in the Energy & Utilities industries experience
- Bachelor's degree, or 5+ years of directly managing and being responsible for multiple large projects experience
- Experience with budgeting, scheduling and cost/benefit analysis
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in working directly with government officials and regulatory bodies
- Experience in data centers, infrastructure service providers, or related technology companies
- Experience in one of project management, planning, engineering, developing or constructing substations or other 66kV or greater energy infrastructure
- High level technical understanding of MV & HV Transmission Line and substation, with familiarity of local grid code, grid connectivity procedures, grid application procedures and roles and responsibilities, standards of performance of Distribution/Transmission Utilities
- Experience in successfully negotiating new tariff rates, power purchase agreements and/or energy infrastructure contracts in regulatory regimes.
- Experience with grid technical compliance frameworks, performance standards and transmission network connection agreements
- Ability to manage complex and/or multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, strong organization, time management, and problem-solving skills capable of building strategic working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to self-start and self-motivate in a dynamic environment with partial information and high levels of ambiguity which requires looking around corners to deliver results for the business

**Job Description**
**Turn complex models into commercial clarity**
AECOM's Energy Advisory practice uses quantitative and techno-economic modelling to underpin the advice we give clients on energy transition, market design, investment and policy decisions. As our practice grows, we're looking for a **Quantitative Modeller** who can work hands-on across a range of modelling approaches from established energy market and dispatch tools through to bespoke, purpose-built models and translate that analysis into commercially grounded advice for clients.
This is a client-facing role working closely with a senior advisory team. You'll need to be comfortable working independently, engaging directly with clients, and always connecting your modelling outputs back to the commercial question at hand. We're open to a wide range of experience above our 5-year minimum for a more senior candidate, there's genuine scope to grow into a technical leadership role within the team over time.
**What you'll be doing**
+ Building, running and interrogating quantitative models techno-economic, energy market and dispatch modelling, multi-sectoral modelling, or other bespoke analytical models with the judgement to choose the right approach for the question at hand
+ Framing modelling exercises around the client's actual decision or advisory question, translating technical outputs into clear commercial insight and recommendations
+ Working independently on modelling tasks with minimal oversight, while knowing when to flag assumptions, limitations or emerging findings to senior team members and clients
+ Presenting technical analysis to non-technical audiences and defending modelling assumptions under scrutiny, with strong written communication to translate methods and findings into clear reports and deliverables
+ Applying your quantitative and problem-structuring skills beyond energy where relevant the underlying capability matters as much as sector-specific tools
+ Contributing to, or leading, broader advisory engagements beyond modelling bringing analytical rigour to non-modelling workstreams as needed
+ For more experienced candidates: leading and developing modelling capability mentoring junior modellers, setting technical standards, and shaping how modelling is positioned within broader advisory engagements
**Qualifications**
What you'll bring
+ Minimum 5 years' work experience, including at least 3 years in a quantitative modelling context we welcome candidates well above this minimum, including those ready for technical leadership
+ Experience in quantitative or techno-economic modelling, ideally including energy market/dispatch modelling, multi-sectoral modelling, or bespoke model development
+ Prior experience in an advisory, consulting or client-facing analytical role this is not a back-office modelling role
+ Tertiary qualification in engineering, economics, mathematics, statistics, actuarial studies or a related quantitative discipline; postgraduate qualification a plus, not essential
+ Strong Python skills essential; experience with GAMS, PLEXOS or similar energy modelling tools highly regarded a self-driven appetite to pick up new tools matters just as much as tools already in hand
+ Genuine interest in, or working knowledge of, energy markets and sectoral decarbonisation pathways (e.g. transport electrification, low-carbon liquid fuels, multi-sectoral modelling), balanced with flexibility to apply your skills in other sectors as needed
**Why AECOM**
Join a global infrastructure leader where your modelling doesn't sit in isolation it feeds directly into the commercial advice shaping energy transition, investment and policy decisions. You'll work alongside a senior advisory team on high-impact client engagements, with real scope to grow your influence, your toolkit and for the right candidate your leadership footprint within the team.
**Ready to put your modelling skills to work on the biggest questions in energy? We'd love to hear from you.**
**Additional Information**
At AECOM, we are committed to maintaining a secure and trustworthy recruitment process and take any fraudulent hiring activity seriously. **_To support this commitment, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment._**
