Job summary

Queensland Health is seeking a Senior Peer Coordinator to lead and champion recovery initiatives across Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs services in Cairns. You will work with consumers, carers and multidisciplinary teams to embed lived experience perspectives in planning, delivery and evaluation of services.

Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse groups, advocate for needs and provide staff training on engagement strategies is essential.

Responsibilities

The Peer Workforce is a vital part of Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, bringing the unique value of lived experience in Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) challenges, or caring for someone with these experiences. Peer workers use their lived experience in a purposeful, safe and professional way to support consumers, families and carers, working alongside clinical and multidisciplinary teams to promote recovery, hope and inclusion. Across inpatient, community, AOD and specialist services, they contribute a distinct perspective that complements clinical care, strengthens person-centred and recovery-oriented practice, and helps ensure services are shaped by the people they serve.

About your opportunity:

As a Senior Peer Coordinator, you will provide leadership in embedding consumer and lived experience perspectives across mental health service planning, delivery and evaluation. Working collaboratively with consumers, carers, families and service providers, you will lead consumer participation initiatives, champion recovery-oriented practice, drive service improvement, and advocate for the needs, rights and wellbeing of consumers, carers and families to enhance service quality and outcomes.

About your role:

• Effectively communicate with consumers, carers, professional groups, and all service providers to assist in planning, delivering and evaluating a mental health consumer focused service.
• Work within appropriate boundaries and draw on knowledge and expertise gained through reflection on own lived experience.
• Deliver training and support to staff within the Mental Health Service and other stakeholders in relation to consumer, family and carer support/education strategies and initiatives, and information regarding National Mental Health Standards and State Policies regarding consumer and family perspectives.
• Act as an advocate for consumers and families utilising mental health services.
• Promote the consumer inclusive recovery focused service model to mental health professionals, consumers, and/or carers, families and community as partners of care.
