Job summary

The Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra seeks a Lead Optical Specialist. This senior role provides strategic direction in optical engineering across astronomy and space instrumentation projects, reporting to the Technical Director with substantial autonomy.

You will lead engineering teams, manage laboratories, and guide the development of optical and metrology capabilities to support current and future programs, including collaborations with partners and stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in optical engineering, preferably involving delivery of complex optical systems in astronomy, space or advanced technology environments.
• Experience combining technical leadership with managing multidisciplinary teams to support project outcomes.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to provide strategic advice.

Responsibilities

• Develop, deliver and advance complex optical systems supporting astronomy, space and instrumentation programs.
• Lead optical engineering teams, manage laboratories and facilities, and drive development of optical/metrology capabilities.
• Oversee design, modelling, integration, alignment, testing and verification across project lifecycles.
