Job summary

Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) seeks a Senior Media Advisor to shape public communications across climate, energy, environment and water initiatives. You will manage media enquiries, craft messages, and coordinate ministerial engagements in a fast-paced environment.

Reporting to the Media Manager, you will deliver high-quality media content and provide expert advice while building credibility with senior leaders and external partners.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in media, journalism or similar or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience in media relations, and an understanding of emergent issues and reputational risks impacting the client group.

• Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $133,348 to $146,945 + superannuation

The NSW DCCEEW media team is currently seeking a Senior Media Advisor to join the team! We’re looking for a proactive and experienced media professional who enjoys working across a broad range of topics and can confidently navigate a fast-paced environment. In this role, you will lead effective media communications, build strong relationships with media representatives, and develop high‑quality media collateral that supports government priorities and elevates the department’s brand. You will provide strategic communication advice, identify emerging issues, coordinate timely media responses, and support major initiatives, events and Ministerial engagements.

About role

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and strategic communications professional to join the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) as a Senior Media Advisor. In this pivotal role, you will help shape and protect the department's reputation by delivering high-quality media and public communications across a diverse portfolio of climate change, energy, environment, water and conservation initiatives. Working in a fast-paced, high-profile environment, you will provide expert media advice, develop engaging media content, manage media enquiries, support executive and ministerial communications, and identify emerging issues to ensure proactive and effective stakeholder engagement.

Reporting to the Media Manager, you will collaborate with subject matter experts, executives, media representatives and Ministerial Offices to deliver clear, accurate and timely communications that support government priorities and strengthen public confidence in the department's work. This is an opportunity to contribute to some of NSW's most significant environmental and sustainability initiatives while working within a dynamic and professional media team.

About You

We are seeking a highly skilled media and communications professional with demonstrated experience managing media relations within a complex and fast-moving environment. You are a confident communicator with exceptional writing skills and the ability to translate technical or sensitive information into clear, compelling messages for a variety of audiences. You bring sound judgement, political awareness and the ability to remain calm under pressure while managing competing priorities and tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will possess strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with a proven ability to build credibility with senior leaders, media representatives and external partners. You will be proactive, solutions-focused and capable of identifying emerging risks and opportunities, while providing strategic communications advice that supports organisational objectives. As part of a highly responsive media team, you will also be willing to participate in an on-call roster to manage media enquiries and emerging issues outside of standard business hours.

Qualifications in media, journalism or a related field, together with experience in media relations and issues management, will be highly regarded.

Essential Requirements

• Tertiary qualifications in media, journalism or similar or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience in media relations, and an understanding of emergent issues and reputational risks impacting on the client group.

Desirable

• Experience working in NSW Government, government communications, ministerial offices or a similar public sector environment.
