Job summary
ANSTO is seeking a Senior Mechanical Technician to support the construction, installation, commissioning, modification and maintenance of complex mechanical systems for accelerator and beamline equipment at our premier research facility.
The role requires a recognised mechanical trade qualification with extensive experience, demonstrated 3D CAD capability (SolidWorks/Autodesk Fusion) and strong safety documentation practices. Applicants must be Australian citizens.
Qualifications
- Recognised mechanical trade qualification with a minimum of eight years in a relevant field.
- Experience operating, maintaining, diagnosing, and optimising complex mechanical systems or scientific instrumentation.
- Proficient in 3D CAD modelling and producing manufacturing drawings for production transfer.
- Skilled with CAD tools including SolidWorks and Autodesk Fusion.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and computer-based systems/software.
Responsibilities
- Plan, maintain and commission complex mechanical systems to meet operating conditions.
- Design and fabricate specialised mechanical equipment for accelerator and beamline integration.
- Manage mechanical projects, installations during shutdowns, and ensure timely delivery.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation including SOPs and SWMS to ensure safety compliance.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices and technicians to maintain high safety and workmanship standards.
- Source materials, spares and tooling to keep mechanical systems running.

The Senior Mechanical Technician provides specialist technical expertise in the fabrication, installation, commissioning, modification, and maintenance of complex mechanical systems supporting accelerator and beamline equipment. This role is critical to enabling world-class science, research, and innovation at ANSTO's Australian Synchrotron.
To be successful in the role, you will require the following:
- A recognised mechanical trade qualification in a relevant discipline (such as Fitting and Turning, Toolmaking, Instrument Making, or equivalent), supported by a minimum of eight years' relevant industry experience, or an equivalent combination of demonstrated skills, knowledge, and practical experience in a specialised mechanical engineering field
- Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in the operation, maintenance, diagnosis, and optimisation of complex mechanical systems and/or scientific instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out manufacturing and fabrication tasks using standard workshop equipment, while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Demonstrated proficiency in 3D CAD modelling (e.g. SolidWorks and Autodesk Fusion), with the ability to develop component and assembly models, produce manufacturing drawings, and support the transition from design to production.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications and the ability to effectively utilise computer-based systems and software
- Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining technical documentation, including Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), risk assessments, and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to provide OHS/WHS advice on mechanical systems and processes and consistently apply and promote safe work practices in accordance with relevant legislation, standards, and organisational procedures.
- Demonstrated high level of attention to detail, with a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work and maintaining high standards of workmanship.
- Experience operating CNC machinery, a current Dogging High Risk Work Licence, and a current Forklift High Risk Work Licence are desirable.
- Experience in the maintenance, testing, and commissioning of Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment would be highly regarded.
- Plan, maintain and commission complex mechanical systems to ensure new and existing mechanical systems are operating at required conditions
- Design and fabrication of specialized mechanical equipment ensuring integration and operation of accelerator and beamlines
- Facilitate and plan the effective running of relevant mechanical projects so that deliverables meet the correct requirements, installation and timing of installations during shutdowns
- Manage technical documentation, writing and developing SOP's and JSA/SWMS's to ensure compliance with facility standards and to obtain permits to work
- Supervise, train and mentor apprentices and technicians to ensure that all works are performed in a safe manner and according to the facility standards
- Identify requirements, source and procure materials, spares, tooling and specialized equipment to ensure continuous running of mechanical systems and service materials.
