Job summary

Blackbook Recruitment is seeking a technically capable Mechanical Project Engineer for a 12+ month contract in the South East suburbs of Melbourne. You will lead mechanical capital projects, supervise contractor activity and coordinate across design, procurement and commissioning teams.

The role requires hands-on delivery, robust piping and structural knowledge, and strong stakeholder engagement with operations and engineering teams to ensure safe, on-time project completion.

Qualifications

• Mechanical Engineering degree required.
• 5–10+ years’ experience in heavy industry or similar environments.
• Experience delivering mechanical components of capital projects.
• Strong knowledge of piping systems, fluid mechanics and equipment design.
• Experience reviewing engineering drawings including layouts, manufacturing drawings and P&IDs.
• Exposure to pressure piping (AS4041) and structural components.
• Experience supervising contractors and site installation activities.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication across engineering and operations teams.
• Exposure to project management disciplines including cost, schedule and risk management.
• Hands-on mechanical engineer with strong delivery capability.

Responsibilities

• Support the delivery of mechanical capital projects including equipment upgrades and plant improvements.
• Lead day-to-day coordination of project activities including contractor supervision and stakeholder liaison.
• Develop and review mechanical designs including piping systems, fluid flow systems and structural components.
• Work with design and drafting teams to produce layouts and drawings.
• Perform engineering calculations for piping, flow and basic structural analysis.
• Prepare work scopes, tender docs and support procurement processes.
• Manage budgets, schedules and contractor performance across work packages.
• Conduct constructability reviews and support hazard and risk analyses.
• Oversee QA processes for procurement and installation.
• Support site installation activities and supervise contractors.
• Develop commissioning plans and participate in commissioning of equipment and processes.
• Collaborate with electrical, process and operations teams for delivery.
