Job summary

Balance Recruitment is seeking a Lead Java Software Engineer for a leading payments provider. You will architect and build Java microservices (Java 17, Spring Boot 3.x) to authorise and settle card payments at scale, ensuring global reliability.

You will mentor engineers, conduct PR reviews, and drive AI-assisted coding adoption using Claude Code CLI, while delivering across the full software lifecycle and ensuring multi-region availability.

Job description

Join our client, a leading payment services provider, as a Lead Java Software Engineer responsible for leading backend engineering across their high-scale payment gateway. In this role, you will architect and develop Java microservices that authorise and settle card payments at massive scale, ensuring seamless, reliable transaction processing globally.

Key responsibilities include designing, developing, and deploying scalable, secure Java microservices using Java 17 and Spring Boot 3.x, managing the migration of features and traffic across modern and legacy platforms, and owning your work throughout the full software development lifecycle.

You'll set the engineering standards by performing pull request reviews, mentoring team members, and driving adoption of AI-assisted coding practices leveraging tools like Claude Code CLI to enhance code generation, refactoring, testing, and troubleshooting efficiency.

Working collaboratively with engineers, product managers, test engineers, and technical program managers, you will align technical strategies with delivery goals to maintain five-nines availability and multi-region deployment reliability.

This position requires strong experience with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, event-driven integration, and high-throughput transactional workloads with PostgreSQL and Oracle.

Proficiency with containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and cloud platforms like Cloud Foundry is essential.

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of backend software engineering experience, including technical leadership within agile teams. Expertise in AI-assisted development and the ability to modernise legacy systems alongside greenfield projects is highly valued.
