Job summary

WorkSafe in Geelong is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel, Insurance & Claims to deliver in-house legal guidance on workers compensation and insurance matters. The role focuses on strategic, practical advice to multiple divisions while managing risk and regulatory compliance.

You will contribute to complex matters, support premium-related litigation, and collaborate with internal teams and external panel lawyers. Hybrid role based in Wadawurrung / Geelong.

Qualifications

• 5+ years post-qualification experience preferred.
• Experience providing high-quality legal advice on WorkCover claims and insurance-related matters.
• Strong judgement and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Understanding of statutory and regulatory environment in Victoria.
• Ability to consult on sensitive issues within tight timeframes and provide practical solutions.
• Ability to interpret legislation and precedents in litigation, regulatory and commercial law contexts.
• Experience in civil litigation in the Victorian court system.

Responsibilities

• Provide high quality, client-focused legal advice to all WorkSafe divisions on claims and insurance issues (workers compensation).
• Advise on claims management decisions including weekly payments, treatment and support decisions.
• Support premium review litigation and related advice for WorkSafe.
• Interpret complex legislation and provide practical risk-based guidance.
• Manage external panel lawyers to obtain high-quality services for WorkSafe.
• Prepare briefing papers for the Board, CEO, and executives as required.
