Job summary

Artefact Heritage and Environment is seeking a Senior Heritage Consultant to manage built heritage projects in NSW. You will lead site work, research, reporting and client advisory elements with a multidisciplinary team to deliver compliant, high-quality outcomes.

You will bring at least five years' heritage industry experience, strong knowledge of NSW legislation and a track record of coordinating complex projects, while ensuring practical and timely client deliverables.

• Demonstrated experience preparing heritage assessments, heritage impact statements and conservation plans

Senior Heritage Consultant - Built Environment

Artefact Heritage and Environment – Pyrmont NSW

As a Senior Heritage Consultant, you will manage and deliver built heritage projects with the support of the Built Environment Team Leader, Technical Directors and a wider multidisciplinary heritage team. You will take ownership of projects and key project components, from research, site work and assessment through to client advice, reports, approvals and final delivery. You will work directly with clients and stakeholders, coordinate project inputs and help ensure our work is accurate, practical, compliant and delivered to a high standard. This is a hands‑on consulting role. You will balance desk‑based research and report preparation with heritage site inspections, archival recording, client meetings, project coordination and engagement with regulators and project partners.

Key responsibilities

Managing built heritage projects and project components from commencement through to final delivery

Planning project tasks, programmes, budgets, resourcing and quality‑assurance activities

Preparing high‑quality heritage assessments, heritage impact statements, conservation management plans, archival recording reports and other consultancy deliverables

Undertaking heritage site inspections, surveys, photographic archival recording, fabric analysis and related field‑based activities

Conducting historical, archival and background research to inform heritage assessments and recommendations

Providing clear, practical and well‑considered heritage advice to clients, project teams and stakeholders

Preparing heritage approval and permit applications, supporting documentation and responses to regulator or client feedback

Liaising with clients, architects, planners, developers, councils, Heritage NSW and other relevant authorities

Coordinating project tasks and working collaboratively with other consultants, specialists and project team members

Reviewing project material and helping to maintain Artefact's technical, editorial and quality standards

About you

At least five years' experience in the heritage industry

Experience in built heritage consulting, heritage planning, heritage conservation, architecture, historical archaeology or a related discipline

Demonstrated experience preparing heritage assessments, heritage impact statements, management plans, archival recording reports or similar professional reports

Sound working knowledge of NSW heritage legislation, planning processes and current heritage best practice

Experience managing projects, substantial project components or consultant workstreams to agreed programmes and budgets

Excellent written communication, research, analytical and report‑writing skills

Experience undertaking heritage inspections, surveys, historical research, archival research, photographic recording or comparable field‑based work

The ability to communicate confidently and professionally with clients, project teams, regulators and stakeholders

Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

Relevant tertiary qualifications in heritage conservation, architecture, archaeology, planning, architectural history or a related discipline
