Job summary

Urbis in Perth is seeking an experienced Heritage Consultant to provide strategic heritage advice across built, historic and Aboriginal cultural heritage matters, contributing to meaningful projects that protect Australia’s shared history.

You’ll work alongside landscape architects, planners, architects and engineers on multidisciplinary projects, applying WA heritage legislation to deliver practical, high‑quality outcomes for clients and communities.

Qualifications

• 2+ years' professional experience in heritage consulting or cultural heritage management.
• Experience across built, historic, Aboriginal heritage and archaeological projects.
• Solid understanding of WA heritage legislation and approvals processes.
• Ability to translate heritage research into clear, practical client advice.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic heritage advice across diverse projects.
• Contribute to heritage assessments, impact statements and management plans.
• Prepare clear heritage reports, documentation and mapping.
• Collaborate with landscape architects, planners, architects and engineers.
• Support Aboriginal heritage projects including background research and fieldwork.

We are offering an exciting opportunity for an inspiring and forward‑thinking Consultant to join our Perth-based team. In this role, you'll provide strategic heritage advice across a diverse range of projects, helping clients navigate built, historical and Aboriginal cultural heritage matters. From heritage assessments, impact studies and management plans to conservation advice and site investigations, you'll contribute to meaningful projects that protect and celebrate Australia's shared history. You'll apply your expertise in heritage, conservation and heritage legislation to deliver practical solutions, working alongside landsape archietcts , planners, architects, engineers and other specialists on complex, multidisciplinary projects. As a trusted member of the team, you'll play a key role in delivering high‑quality outcomes for clients. As a member of our Heritage team, every day is different! You'll make an impact by:

• Supporting the delivery of a diverse range of heritage projects across Western Australia, working alongside experienced heritage specialists across:
• Aboriginal cultural heritage and engagement
• Built and historic heritage assessments
• Conservation Management Plans and heritage strategies
• Heritage Impact Statements and development advice
• Historical research, archival recording and site documentation
• Interpretation planning and storytelling
• Archaeological and cultural heritage investigations
• Undertaking historical and archival research, site inspections, fieldwork and heritage analysis to build an understanding of places and their cultural heritage values.
• Assisting with the preparation of clear, high‑quality heritage reports, assessments, mapping and supporting documentation under the guidance of senior team members.
• Supporting Aboriginal cultural heritage projects, including background research, fieldwork, consultation activities and preparation of heritage documentation, while developing your understanding of culturally appropriate practice.
• Working collaboratively with heritage specialists, archaeologists, historians, architects, planners, designers and engagement practitioners on multidisciplinary projects.
• Building your understanding of WA heritage legislation, planning processes and best‑practice heritage management, with mentoring and support from experienced practitioners.
• Contributing to the day‑to‑day coordination and delivery of projects, including managing your allocated tasks, communicating with project teams and meeting agreed deadlines.
• Supporting the preparation of proposals and tenders and contributing to the continued growth of our heritage practice.
• Participating in site visits, workshops, team activities and industry events, building your professional experience and networks across WA's heritage sector.

About You:

• Tertiary qualifications in archaeology, history, cultural heritage, heritage conservation, anthropology, or a closely related discipline.
• 2+ years' professional experience in heritage consulting, cultural heritage management, heritage planning or conservation, preferably within a consultancy or multidisciplinary environment.
• Experience or demonstrated interest in working across a diverse range of heritage projects, including built heritage, historical heritage, Aboriginal cultural heritage and archaeological projects.
• An understanding of Western Australian heritage legislation, policy and approvals processes, including the Heritage Act 2018, Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 and relevant planning frameworks.
• Ability to undertake heritage research, site investigations, assessments and reporting, and to translate findings into clear and practical advice for clients and project teams.
• An appreciation of Western Australian historical places, architecture, construction methods and traditional building fabric, with an interest in conservation and adaptive reuse.
• Experience working with, or a strong commitment to working respectfully with, Aboriginal communities, Traditional Owners and knowledge holders, including an understanding of culturally appropriate engagement and heritage management practices.
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, accurate and professional heritage documentation.
• Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including alongside planners, designers, architects, archaeologists, historians and engagement specialists.
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities and deadlines in a consulting environment.
• A willingness to undertake site‑based work and travel within Western Australia as required.
• Skills in GIS, CAD, Adobe Creative Suite or other mapping/design software would be advantageous, but are not essential.
