Transgrid’s Energy Transition team develops and delivers initiatives to ensure the secure operation of the NSW power system at up to 100% instantaneous renewable supply, including delivering system security services and supporting the operability of the grid.

The Energy Transition team is heavily focussed on delivering solutions to maintain system strength in the NSW power system. We have identified a diverse portfolio of solutions required, including synchronous condensers, over 5GW of grid-forming batteries, modifications to synchronous machines and contracts with synchronous machines to fill gaps in system strength.

Are you an electricity system and technology expert, passionate about enabling the rapid transformation of Australia’s electricity system? Do you have a creative mindset, strong communication skills and a keen interest in new technologies? Do you have experience in power system modelling and an understanding of the inner workings of grid-forming batteries?

If so, you could be our next Senior Engineer, though being an Engineer in not essential.

The Opportunity

We are hiring for a Senior Engineer. In this role, the Senior Engineer will:

  • Guide the development of contracts and technical specifications for non-network proponents (including grid-forming batteries), for stable voltage waveform support services.
  • Guide or undertake power system modelling (in PSSE and PSCAD) to understand the need for, or the benefit of, solutions that provide stable voltage waveform and fault current support.
  • Guide technical and commercial feasibility assessments of synchronous machine modifications, synchronous condenser services and grid-forming batteries for system strength.
  • Lead engagements with ‘non-network’ proponents (including existing generators and dozens of future grid-forming battery proponents) and support commercial negotiations with them.
  • Guide market modelling to identify portfolios of system strength solutions and contracting decisions with synchronous machines.
  • Prepare business cases and write regulatory documentation to support capital investment decisions for infrastructure and non-network services required to deliver the energy transition.
  • Investigate future power system trends and opportunities, such as distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, renewable energy zones, and assess its implications on the transition of the power system.
  • Monitor technological, market and policy developments in the National Electricity Market, and assesses implications for Transgrid.
  • Lead discussions with stakeholders to build long lasting relationships with government bodies and industry groups, including AEMO and other transmission and distribution operators.
What you’ll bring
  • Extensive technical experience in the electricity industry, including a strong background with electricity generation and new technologies such as grid-forming batteries.
  • Power system modelling expertise and a deep understanding of inverter-based resource dynamics is valuable.
  • A creative and collaborative approach – eager to guide the energy transition.
  • A strong communicator – willing to speak at industry forums and lead discussions with proponents, as well as being an effective writer.
  • Knowledge of the National Electricity Market including rules, regulations and government policies.
  • Well-developed analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills.
  • Some commercial experience in the electricity industry is desirable.
  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline, for example Engineering and Commerce degrees.
