Job summary

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is recruiting for a WA Future System Design & Transformation role in Melbourne to deliver strategic engineering initiatives across SWIS.

You will work with industry bodies and governments to ensure secure, reliable power while guiding the energy transition. A Degree in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering and strong analytical skills are required.

Qualifications

• Experience in a technical, operational or planning environment.

About the role

AEMO’s WA Future System Design & Transformation group is focussed on how we navigate the energy future, through identifying, planning for and managing emerging system challenges and opportunities, whilst ensuring Western Australians continue to have access to secure, reliable and affordable energy in the years to come. The WA Future System Engineering Team (FSE) takes a future-focussed and pragmatic system-wide engineering perspective to the SWIS’ energy transition. It is responsible for identifying, prioritising solutions to, and mobilising industry wide collaboration and support for, the most critical technical challenges of the energy transition.

Focused on the future of Western Australia’s main electricity system – the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) – and gas sector, you will be responsible for delivering strategic engineering initiatives that support AEMO's ability to maintain power system security and reliability in the SWIS, whilst enabling the industry to transition to an affordable and sustainable energy future.

What you will be doing

• Lead the delivery of major system design and transformation initiatives under the SWIS Transition Planning Framework, driving outcomes that support the evolving needs of the power system.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across AEMO, industry and market bodies to coordinate engineering activities, align priorities and optimise the delivery of related initiatives.
• Provide power system engineering expertise and technical advice to support the development and implementation of market reforms, ensuring policy, regulatory and market mechanisms appropriately reflect technical requirements.
• Deliver projects and initiatives that enable proponents to realise the value of services provided by their assets and support early transition activities through to operational readiness and handover to AEMO Operations.
• Represent AEMO's technical expertise to industry participants, governments and other stakeholders by communicating insights from the SWIS Engineering Roadmap, building understanding of key initiatives and strengthening AEMO's position as a trusted leader in the energy transition.

What you will bring to the role

• Degree qualifications in Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, supported by significant experience in a relevant technical, operational or planning environment.
• Strong understanding of the operation and planning of large power systems, and the engineering challenges that need to be addressed as the SWIS transitions.
• Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and change, think strategically about future system needs, navigate ambiguity and influence outcomes in complex environments.
• Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to critically review, challenge and validate complex modelling and technical analysis that informs key decisions and stakeholder engagement.
