Job summary

accesstel Pty Ltd is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to shape the architecture, reliability and security of secure embedded controllers used in Australia’s critical infrastructure. You will work hands-on across the full stack, mentoring others and helping define engineering standards.

The team is Melbourne-based with remote or hybrid arrangements possible, and some travel to Melbourne for hardware bring-up and validation.

Qualifications

• Extensive embedded Linux experience with hands-on Yocto/OpenEmbedded builds.
• Experience developing Linux device drivers and understanding the device model.
• Hands-on with U-Boot and robust OTA update mechanisms (RAUC).
• Experience communicating with devices over CAN, RS485 and protocols such as Modbus/SNMP/MQTT/TCP/IP.
• Solid understanding of analogue/digital interfaces and electronics for sensor integration.
• Strong C/C++ and Python with peripheral interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO).
• Experience building high-uptime, remote or autonomous deployments.
• Ability to communicate architectural trade-offs clearly.
• A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in Electronic/Computer Engineering or CS.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to design and evolution of embedded software architecture for scalability, security and long-term support.
• Develop secure embedded software from bootloader to Linux services and OTA updates.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers to bring up boards and validate designs.
• Design interfaces (Modbus, CAN, SNMP, MQTT, Ethernet/IP) and digital/analogue I/O.
• Build for long-life field deployments with diagnostics, observability and fault tolerance.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines and test automation with the Embedded Capability team.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across the embedded domain.

Where you'll work

Our engineering team is based in Melbourne, but we're hiring the best person for the job, wherever they're based. That includes New Zealand. We'll work out the arrangement (Melbourne-based, remote or hybrid) with the right candidate, with some travel to Melbourne for hardware bring-up, lab validation and team collaboration. You'll need full work rights in the country you're based in.

What you'll do

• Contribute to the design and evolution of our embedded software architecture, with scalability, security and long-term supportability in mind

• Develop secure embedded software from bootloader to Linux services, including secure boot, software integrity and OTA update mechanisms

• Work with our hardware engineers to bring up new boards, validate designs and optimise behaviour across the hardware/software boundary

• Design and implement communication interfaces including Modbus, CAN bus, SNMP, MQTT and Ethernet/IP, plus digital and analogue I/O

• Build for long-life field deployments, with strong diagnostics, observability, upgradeability and fault tolerance

• Shape verification strategy with Quality Engineering, and improve our CI/CD pipelines and test automation

• Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across the embedded domain

What you'll bring (Essential Skills – do not apply without these):

• Extensive embedded Linux experience, including hands-on Yocto and OpenEmbedded builds

• Experience developing Linux device drivers, with a strong grasp of the Linux device model and device tree (DTS)

• Hands-on experience with the U-Boot bootloader, and robust OTA update mechanisms such as RAUC

• Experience communicating with devices over CAN bus and RS485, plus protocols such as Modbus, SNMP, MQTT and TCP/IP

• A solid understanding of analogue electronics (AC and DC measurement) and how to interface it to digital platforms

• Advanced C/C++ and Python, and experience with peripheral interfaces (UART, SPI, I²C, GPIO)

• Experience building high-uptime, self-recovering systems for remote or autonomous deployment

• Strong debugging skills across hardware and software

• The ability to make and clearly communicate architectural trade-offs

• A tertiary qualification in Electronic Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience

• Secure boot and TPM experience

• Industry experience with power systems (DC distribution, inverters, battery management) and control system design

• CI/CD pipelines, Docker and hardware-in-the-loop testing

• Board bring-up, and reading schematics and datasheets

• RTOS and microcontroller exposure

• Exposure to IoT, telemetry or energy and industrial control environments

• Knowledge of information security and industrial control system standards
