Job summary

UNSW is seeking a Senior Education Designer to lead assessment and feedback initiatives across the Curriculum and Educational Design Team. You will collaborate with academics to translate pedagogy into practical assessment solutions and support digital platforms and AI‑enabled approaches.

Based in Sydney, this hands‑on, university‑wide role drives professional development, resources, and scalable practices while aligning with UNSW's values and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in education, learning design or a related field.
• Experience supporting academic staff in higher education, across assessment and curriculum design.
• Knowledge of learning technologies used in assessment (Moodle/Turnitin/Inspera).
• Strong understanding of contemporary assessment and feedback practice.
• Experience designing and facilitating professional development workshops.

Responsibilities

• Partner with academics and faculty education teams to design authentic, inclusive assessment tasks and feedback mechanisms aligned with learning outcomes.
• Support course and program‑level assessment strategies, including mapping and constructive alignment processes.
• Advise on digital tools for formative and summative assessment and feedback, including AI in assessment.
• Design, develop and facilitate workshops and learning resources for face‑to‑face, hybrid and online settings.
• Create guides, templates and case studies to simplify good assessment and feedback practice.
• Contribute to communities of practice and professional development programs across PVCE and faculties.
• Scope, pilot, evaluate and scale new approaches to assessment and educational innovation.
• Collect, analyse and report data on assessment practices to inform improvement.
• Track sector trends and policy changes to refine UNSW approaches.
• Deliver responsive support to faculties and central units, upholding UNSW values and safe working practices.

Why Your Role Matters

Assessment should do more than measure learning - it should help create it. As Senior Education Designer, you will bring specialist expertise in assessment and feedback to UNSW's Curriculum and Educational Design Team, partnering with academics and faculty education teams to shape experiences that are authentic, inclusive and aligned with course and program learning outcomes.

From constructive alignment and feedback literacy to AI in assessment and digital platforms, you will translate contemporary pedagogy into practical solutions. You will support course and program assessment strategies, advise on formative and summative approaches, and help academic teams use digital tools with confidence.

This is a hands‑on, university‑wide role where ideas move from workshop whiteboard to pilot, evaluation and scale. You will create useful resources, facilitate professional development in face‑to‑face, hybrid and online settings, contribute to communities of practice, and use evidence, data and sector trends to keep improving practice.

Based in the Pro Vice‑Chancellor, Education's Educational Excellence Team, you will work across faculties and central teams to strengthen student learning, engagement and academic integrity. You will join a collaborative team of Educational Designers and report to the Lead, Curriculum and Educational Design.

Responsibilities Summary

• Partner with academics and faculty education teams to design inclusive, authentic assessment tasks and feedback mechanisms aligned with learning outcomes and pedagogical best practice.
• Support course and program-level assessment strategies, including assessment mapping and constructive alignment processes.
• Provide practical advice on digital tools for formative and summative assessment and feedback, including emerging approaches to AI in assessment.
• Design, develop and facilitate workshops, consultations and learning resources in face‑to‑face, hybrid and online settings to strengthen assessment design and feedback literacy.
• Create guides, templates and case studies that make good assessment and feedback practice easy to understand and apply.
• Contribute to communities of practice, professional development programs and integrated initiatives across the PVCE and faculties.
• Scope, pilot, evaluate and help scale new approaches to assessment and educational innovation.
• Collect, analyse and report data on assessment practices and student feedback to inform continuous improvement.
• Track sector trends, evidence-based practice, policy changes, internal reviews and emerging digital assessment platforms to refine UNSW approaches.
• Deliver responsive, solutions‑focused support to Faculties, Schools, central units and the Teaching Commons, while actively demonstrating UNSW's Code of Conduct and Values and contributing to safe ways of working.

Skills and Experience Summary

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in education, learning design or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience supporting academic staff in higher education, preferably across assessment, curriculum design or digital learning.
• Working knowledge of learning technologies used in assessment, such as Moodle, Turnitin, Inspera or similar platforms.
• A strong understanding of contemporary assessment and feedback practice, including authentic assessment, formative feedback and constructive alignment.
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing and facilitating professional development workshops across face‑to‑face, hybrid and online contexts.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain educational concepts clearly and collaborate across diverse academic teams.
• Strong organisational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to deadlines.
• A proactive, student‑centred approach to problem‑solving, with attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement.
• Confidence using Microsoft 365 and online platforms and systems, together with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in curriculum and learning design.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's values, strategic priorities, policies, teaching and learning excellence, and health and safety responsibilities.
