Job description

Details: Ready to lead meaningful environmental outcomes for the ACT?

Access Canberra is seeking an accomplished and strategic leader to join the Environment and Specialised Regulation Branch as Senior Director, Environment Regulation. This pivotal role provides leadership and oversight of a broad range of environmental regulatory functions, including environmental protection, water resources, lakes, waste, cemeteries, and environment-related conservation activities. The position is responsible for ensuring these functions are delivered in accordance with the Environment Protection Act 1997 and other relevant legislation.

Reporting to the Executive Branch Manager, you will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for authorisations, compliance, investigations, enforcement, environmental quality, and stakeholder engagement. You will ensure regulatory activities are delivered effectively, consistently, and in alignment with legislative requirements, government priorities, and contemporary regulatory practice.

As a delegate of the ACT Environment Protection Authority (EPA), you will support the EPA's statutory functions, provide high-level strategic advice, and drive regulatory outcomes that protect and enhance the ACT's environment. Working collaboratively across government, industry, community organisations, and interstate jurisdictions, you will build strong partnerships, influence environmental policy and regulatory practice, and address issues of regional and cross-border significance.

As a member of the Access Canberra Senior Leadership Group, you will contribute to organisational strategy, governance, and decision-making. You will champion continuous improvement, foster a high-performing and inclusive workplace culture, and represent the ACT Government and the Environment Protection Authority in stakeholder, community, and media engagements.

This is a unique opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the ACT's environmental future while leading a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality regulatory outcomes for the community.

Join us and help shape a sustainable future for Canberra.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex regulatory, compliance, investigation and/or enforcement functions within a government or statutory regulatory environment.
  • Experience supporting or operating within a statutory authority or as a statutory decision-maker is highly desirable.
  • This position does not require a Working with Vulnerable People Check.

Notes: A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.

Note: Under the ACTPS employment framework you may be placed in another role where required for the efficient administration of the service.

The ACT public service is committed to closing the gap, underpinned by the belief that when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a genuine say in the design and delivery of policies, programs and services that affect them, better life outcomes are achieved.
