Qualifications

• Proficiency in SQL and Python.

• Knowledge of data governance and metadata management.
• Degree in a quantitative discipline is highly regarded.

Location: Mackay / Rockhampton / Brisbane

Senior Decision Scientist

Drive data-led decision making across Aurizon by transforming complex data into meaningful insights, predictive models and strategic recommendations that influence business outcomes. This role sits within our Data and Insights team and partners with stakeholders across the organisation to solve complex business challenges through advanced analytics and data storytelling.

About the Role

As the Senior Decision Scientist, you will bridge the gap between business intelligence, advanced analytics and decision science. Working closely with business leaders, analysts and data engineers, you'll develop innovative solutions that support strategic planning, operational performance and evidence-based decision making across the organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

• Partnering with stakeholders to understand business challenges and develop analytical solutions that deliver measurable outcomes.
• Building and maintaining models, frameworks and analytical tools that support planning, risk management and performance improvement.
• Developing enterprise-level Power BI dashboards and compelling data visualisations that inform strategic decisions.
• Leading cross-functional analytics projects from concept through to implementation.
• Collaborating with data engineers and analysts to ensure data quality, accessibility and governance standards.
• Supporting capability uplift across the business through coaching, training and knowledge sharing.

About You

You are a commercially minded data professional who enjoys solving complex problems and influencing decision-makers through data-driven insights.

To be successful, you'll bring:

• Approximately 5+ years' experience in decision science, data science, advanced analytics or data engineering.
• Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language such as Python.
• Experience working across descriptive, predictive and analytical solutions.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Knowledge of data governance, metadata management and security principles.
• A relevant degree in a quantitative discipline will be highly regarded.
