Job description

Be bold. Be creative. Be part of the fight for a green and peaceful future.

At Greenpeace Australia Pacific (GPAP), we believe a better world is possible and we’re determined to make it real. We are an independent campaigning organisation, powered by people and creative action, taking on the biggest environmental and climate challenges of our time. Our priorities are:

  • Tackling climate change by stopping emissions from fossil fuel extraction at source
  • Protecting nature, including our oceans and forests, by stopping the largest sources of environmental destruction like industrial fishing and deforestation

Whatever your role at GPAP, you’ll be part of something bigger: a passionate global movement that sparks action, holds decision‑makers to account, and drives lasting change for people and the planet. This is an opportunity to use your skills, creativity, and commitment to help shape a future worth fighting for.

  • Role: Full time, Permanent position
  • Location: Open to candidates Australia wide, however Sydney, Melbourne or Darwin based candidates preferred
The Team

The Campaign Team is responsible for fighting for strong climate action and nature protection. Whether it’s preventing huge new gas mines, taking the fight of the Pacific to the world’s biggest stages, or advocating for solutions to replace harmful forms of economic activity, you’ll be working on campaigns we believe will make the world safer and more just.

Our Campaigning Team is divided up into 3 core streams: Climate and Energy, Nature, and Pacific. We are looking for someone to join our Climate and Energy team, reporting to our Head of Climate and Energy, to help leverage Greenpeace’s power to influence and inspire decision‑makers to shift in a way that aligns with the speed necessary to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

The Role

As a Senior Campaigner, you will devise, coordinate, and deliver priority climate and energy campaigns aligned with GPAP’s strategic plan. You will be at the forefront of tackling major environmental issues, including stopping the expansion of gas extraction and exports, advocating for ambitious emissions policies, addressing extreme weather events, and holding fossil fuel industries accountable.

In the first year of this role, you will focus primarily on campaigning to stop the expansion of gas extraction, use and export from Australia. The portfolio will also encompass broader climate and energy issues, including key emissions policies, data centres, extreme weather events and Australia’s international fossil fuel exports.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Campaign Strategy & Execution: Lead the creation and rollout of dynamic, ambitious climate campaign strategies that integrate mobilisation, storytelling, political, corporate, and community organising tactics.
  • Movement Leadership & Collaboration: Mobilise interdisciplinary project teams across GPAP and build powerful coalitions with movement allies, grassroots communities, and external stakeholders.
  • Media & Public Representation: Serve as a spokesperson for Greenpeace, presenting compelling narratives to the media, public, policy makers, and corporate leaders.
  • Content Creation & Action: Guide and develop inspiring campaign content (reports, media releases, videos, emails) and integrate creative non-violent direct action tactics into overall strategies.
  • Research, Insights & Adaptation: Utilise deep research and political analysis to identify leverage points, navigate changing external environments, and pivot campaign strategies effectively.
  • Budget & Project Management: Manage campaign project budgets, coordinate contractors/volunteers, and deliver transparent reporting to internal leaders and funding partners.
The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who brings creativity, agility, and leadership to every stage of campaign planning and execution. From strategy and stakeholder engagement to content creation and media representation. You'll have excellent communication, problem-solving, and influencing skills with the ability to lead diverse teams without direct authority. You’ll ideally also have:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a campaigning or similar strategic advocacy role.
  • Proven track record of designing and deploying successful, winning campaign strategies.
  • At least 1 year of experience managing people (contractors, staff, or volunteers) or leading matrix project teams across departments.
  • Demonstrated experience in media engagement, public speaking, and managing high‑level stakeholder relationships.
  • Deep understanding of political and corporate power dynamics, government processes, and policy leverage points (knowledge of Australian gas project regulation is highly desirable).
What we can offer you
  • Be part of a globally respected brand: Work with one of the most influential names in the environmental NGO space, backed by five decades of courageous campaigning.
  • Work-life balance you can rely on: A 35-hour work week, supported by GPAP’s integrity framework, plus generous leave options (including an additional week of paid leave between Christmas and New Year).
  • Workplace designed for impact: Enjoy our purpose-built head office in Rosebery, Sydney and Co-Working spaces in Perth and Melbourne to foster collaboration and creativity.
  • A culture of belonging: Join a team that truly celebrates inclusivity, diversity, and a sense of community.
  • Support for your wellbeing: Access an annual health and wellness allowance to help you thrive both inside and outside of work.

Annual full-time salary: $120,525.69 per annum plus 12% superannuation.

GPAP is an equal opportunity employer with a longstanding commitment of providing a work environment that respects the dignity and worth of each individual. We recognise and value the benefits and strengths that diversity brings to our employees and the whole organisation, and we thrive in an environment that encourages respect and trust.
