Job summary

Trideca is recruiting on behalf of a leading Australian health services organisation for a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer embedded in the product team. This role blends data engineering and data analysis, writing the code that gets data out and reading it to know which number actually answers the question.

Qualifications

• Five or more years in BI, data engineering or analytics engineering with an engineering bias.
• Strong Python and SQL skills, able to write maintainable extraction/transform code.
• Practical AWS experience, especially S3, and pulling data from APIs.
• Tableau capability for dashboards and underlying datasets.
• Sharp analytical judgement to select the right metrics for questions.

Responsibilities

• Write and automate code to extract operational data from source systems, AWS and third party tools.
• Replace manual reporting with automated, repeatable processes and rebuild scripted workarounds.
• Model and prepare data so numbers are consistent, explainable and defensible.

About Role

Trideca is recruiting on behalf of a leading Australian health services organisation for a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer, embedded in the product team.This team needs the person who straddles both Data Engineering and Data Analysis, who can write the code that gets the data out and read it well enough to know which number actually answers the question.

The team is currently making operational decisions without the data it needs, and the reporting that does exist is largely manual. Your first job is to fix that: automate the extraction, build reporting the team can trust, and retire the scripts holding it together today. There is a real backlog waiting, and a dedicated data analyst is approved to join after you, so the balance of the role shifts further toward engineering over time.

What You'll Be Doing

• Write and automate the code that extracts operational data from source, primarily AWS and S3, alongside the third party tools the team relies on.
• Replace manual, ad hoc reporting with automated and repeatable processes, and rebuild the scripted workarounds that currently sit underneath it.
• Model and prepare the data behind operational reporting so the numbers are consistent, explainable and defensible.
• Build and maintain the Tableau reporting the team uses day to day, and the datasets that sit behind it.
• Work directly with product stakeholders to translate what they ask for into what they actually need, including recommending the metric that answers the underlying question.
• Help shape the move to a managed data platform such as Databricks or Snowflake as the organisation stands one up.

What You Bring

• Five or more years across business intelligence, data engineering or analytics engineering, with a hands-on engineering bias.
• Strong Python and SQL, and the judgement to write extraction and transformation code that someone else can maintain.
• Practical AWS experience, S3 in particular, and comfort pulling data out of third party tools and APIs.
• Tableau capability that covers both the dashboard and the dataset behind it.
• Real analytical judgement — the ability to interrogate a reporting request and land on the metric that answers it.
• Comfort operating as the only data specialist in a product squad, with a backlog to prioritise and little existing structure to inherit.

Nice to Have

• Experience with a modern data platform such as Databricks or Snowflake, particularly standing one up
• dbt or a comparable transformation framework, and orchestration with Airflow, Prefect or Dagster.
• Dimensional modelling, or a track record of turning ad hoc reporting into a durable data model.
• Health, clinical or other regulated data experience.
