Job summary

Australian Broadcasting Corporation is seeking a Senior Android Engineer to lead the development and maintenance of ABC Android apps. You will shape the long-term technical roadmap, guide design and delivery, and ensure scalable, secure, accessible mobile experiences across ABC platforms.

You will mentor engineers, drive best practices, and collaborate with product, design and stakeholders to deliver high-quality features. Strong Kotlin skills and public-facing app experience are essential.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join ABC Digital Product as a Senior Android Engineer and help shape the mobile applications Australians use to access ABC content.

Working under the broad direction of the Mobile Lead, you'll combine highly advanced Android development skills with technical leadership across major product features. You'll help define the long-term technical roadmap, guide design and delivery and create scalable, secure, accessible and high-performing mobile experiences.

You'll also tackle complex production challenges, contribute to engineering standards and support other engineers through technical guidance and mentoring.

What You'll Be Doing

• Lead the development, maintenance and support of ABC Android applications, delivering high-quality features and reusable components across mobile products.
• Help define the long-term technical roadmap and contribute to product planning, solution design and engineering strategy with colleagues across Digital Product.
• Coordinate major feature delivery in your area, managing dependencies, timeframes and expectations while keeping technical and non-technical stakeholders informed.
• Identify, triage and resolve complex production issues, driving improvements in performance, security, accessibility and reliability.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to other engineers, while helping evolve engineering standards and development practices.
• Maintain clear technical and project documentation to support sustainable development and ongoing product improvements.

What You'll Bring

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent significant skills, knowledge and experience.
• Significant experience developing complex, scalable, secure, accessible and high-performing applications across mobile platforms and devices.
• Highly advanced Android development skills, ideally demonstrated through public-facing applications written in Kotlin, along with deep knowledge of modern frameworks and tools.
• Extensive experience with automated testing, including unit, integration and end-to-end testing and a strong focus on building quality into delivery.
• Extensive mobile release experience, including CI/CD, automation pipelines, production monitoring and post-release stakeholder engagement.
• Demonstrated technical leadership, with experience providing guidance and mentoring across engineering teams.
• Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to build productive relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong planning and organisational skills, with experience coordinating multi-person delivery, managing dependencies and communicating progress and challenges.
