Job description

Umbrella Entertainment is an Australian-owned film distribution and entertainment company with a long history in the local screen industry. The business acquires, distributes and manages an extensive catalogue of film and entertainment content across theatrical, home entertainment and digital platforms.

Operating through multiple entities and brands across Australia and New Zealand, Umbrella works with filmmakers, studios, licensors, retailers and streaming platforms, managing content throughout its commercial lifecycle.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a highly experienced, commercially astute Senior Accountant to play a key role in managing the financial operations of our growing entertainment business.

Reporting to senior management and working collaboratively alongside an existing Senior Accountant, you'll take responsibility for financial and management accounting across seven entities in Australia and New Zealand.

This is a senior, hands-on position requiring strong technical accounting expertise, sound commercial judgement and the ability to manage complex financial operations while providing meaningful insights to support business decisions.

You'll be equally comfortable managing the detail of month-end accounting, reconciliations and compliance as you are analysing financial performance, managing cash flow and discussing business results with senior leadership.

We're looking for someone who brings experience, confidence and initiative, with the ability to take ownership, improve processes and contribute to the ongoing development of the finance function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the full accounting cycle across multiple business entities, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyse monthly management accounts, including P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow statements.
  • Provide detailed financial analysis, variance reporting and commercial insights to senior management.
  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close, general ledger reconciliations and intercompany transactions.
  • Manage accounts payable, receivable, payroll and statutory accounting obligations.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian and New Zealand taxation and regulatory requirements, working with external advisers as required.
  • Maintain strong financial controls, accounting policies and reporting processes.
  • Utilise Xero extensively to maintain accurate financial records, produce reports and support efficient financial operations.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for systems improvement, automation and greater operational efficiency.
  • Partner with senior management and other departments to support financial planning and commercial decision-making.
About You

You'll be an accomplished accountant with extensive experience managing the financial operations of a complex business.

  • CA or CPA qualification, supported by strong technical accounting knowledge.
  • 10+ years' experience in financial and management accounting, ideally within a commercially focused business.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the full accounting cycle, including month-end and year-end processes.
  • Strong experience working across multiple entities, including intercompany accounting and consolidations.
  • Minimum 5 years' hands-on Xero experience, with 10+ years highly regarded.
  • Advanced financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management capabilities.
  • Strong understanding of Australian accounting standards, taxation and statutory compliance.
  • High-level commercial acumen, analytical capability and attention to detail.
  • Strong technology skills and the ability to identify opportunities to improve financial systems and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to engage directly with senior management.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and take ownership of financial outcomes.
The Person

Beyond your technical expertise, you'll bring maturity, sound judgement and a collaborative approach.

You'll be confident in your knowledge without being inflexible, comfortable challenging ideas constructively and capable of building productive relationships with colleagues who have different working styles.

You'll have the intellectual curiosity to question financial information, identify potential issues and recommend practical solutions.

Most importantly, you'll be someone who enjoys being genuinely hands-on. While this is a senior role with significant responsibility and commercial exposure, you'll remain closely involved in the accounting detail rather than simply overseeing the work of others.

This is an opportunity to apply your accounting expertise within an established Australian entertainment business with diverse operations across Australia and New Zealand.

You'll work closely with senior leadership, contribute to financial and operational decisions, and have the opportunity to influence how the finance function operates and evolves.
