Job summary

Griffith University in Brisbane South (Nathan) is seeking a Scientific Officer (Chemistry) to support teaching and research in the South Brisbane laboratories. The role focuses on teaching activities with occasional support for research facilities and engagement, plus maintaining laboratory documentation and assisting with H&S compliance.

You will provide technical support for teaching, calibrate and service equipment, supervise staff, and assist with external collaborations.

Qualifications

• Degree in Science majoring in Chemistry or equivalent.
• Strong lab and technical skills for teaching and research settings.
• Experience in risk assessment and lab safety with chemicals and instrumentation.

Responsibilities

• Provide teaching support: planning, set-up, running, and dismantling experiments for teaching laboratories.
• Calibrate, maintain, and service instrumentation and equipment.
• Train and supervise scientific staff and casual staff as directed by the manager.
• Provide technical assistance to Griffith University staff, students and external partners.
• Support ESC outreach and community events as directed.

About the opportunity

We are currently looking for a Scientific Officer (Chemistry) to support teaching and research in the School of Environment and Science’s South Brisbane laboratories. The position will be primarily supporting teaching activities and, on occasion, also assisting research facilities and engagement activities. The role also includes the upkeep of laboratory documentation and assisting with H&S compliance.

As a Scientific Officer (Chemistry), you will take on complex challenges, using your skills and experience to drive meaningful change. Here’s how you’ll make it matter:

• Provide technical and operational support for teaching, e.g., planning; set-up; refreshing; pre-running; using and demonstrating equipment; and dismantling of experiments for teaching laboratories.
• Perform regular calibration, minor maintenance and service scheduling of all relevant instrumentation and equipment.
• Provide training and supervision of Scientific Assistants, Attendants and Casual staff when they are assigned to the area that is within the remit of the Scientific Officer’s responsibility.
• Provide technical assistance, including advice on sample preparation, to Griffith University staff and students, and representatives from external organisations as directed by Technical & Core Facility Manager.
• Support ESC outreach and community engagement events and activities as directed by the line managers.

You will also have:

• A degree in Science majoring in Chemistry and relevant practical experience, or an equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
• Strong laboratory and technical skills, including the ability to plan, set up, operate, and maintain chemistry experiments and equipment in a teaching and research environment.
• Demonstrated experience in risk assessment and laboratory safety, particularly in the handling of chemicals, biological reagents, and scientific instrumentation.
• Excellent documentation and organisational skills, with the ability to develop clear procedures, resource statements, and operational protocols.
• Proven ability to lead, train, and support technical staff, as well as provide expert assistance to students, academics, and external stakeholders.

Candidates must have full unrestricted Australian work rights and will be subject to a National criminal history check.

HEW 5 - Base range - $82,415.66 - $92,456.55 + 17% superannuation. Full package range - $96,426.31 - $108,174.16.
