Job description

Southern Highlands Christian School is seeking a passionate, NESA-accredited Science teacher who can take Physics through to Year 12. Applications are warmly welcomed from experienced teachers and from those earlier in their careers.

We are a Preschool to Year 12 co-educational day school offering nurturing, challenging, Christ-centred learning, set on seven acres on the outskirts of Bowral in the beautiful Southern Highlands. Science at SHCS is an invitation to wonder: to investigate the order, beauty and intricacy of God’s creation, to ask hard questions, and to think carefully and Biblically about the physical world.

THE POSITION
  • Department High School – Science
  • Status – Permanent,0.6 FTE to Full-Time (negotiable for the right applicant)
  • Reporting – Head of Science, and Head of High School
  • Award / Agreement – Remuneration, duties and conditions as per the School’s applicable Award or Enterprise Agreement (or as revised)
  • Applications Close 28 August 2026
KEY REQUIREMENTS
  • A committed Christian of evangelical persuasion, actively involved in a local church, and able to sincerely affirm the School’s Statement of Faith.
  • Suitably qualified and NESA accredited in NSW, with a genuine passion for Science education and embedding a Christian worldview in their teaching.
  • Qualified to teach Junior Science (Stages 4 and 5) and Stage 6 Physics; a second Stage 6 Science or Mathematics is an advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and an understanding of the developmental, spiritual and emotional needs of adolescents.
  • Competent with technology in teaching, learning and laboratory practice, and committed to your own ongoing professional learning.
  • A commitment to a child safe culture, strong parent partnerships, staff devotions and the wider life of the school.
  • A current Working with Children Check.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate engaging programs across Stages 4, 5 and 6, compliant with NESA requirements and taught from a Biblical perspective.
  • Deliver Stage 6 Physics with academic rigour, preparing students well for the HSC and further study.
  • Plan, conduct and supervise practical investigations safely, maintaining laboratory safety standards and caring for faculty equipment.
  • Foster a positive, child safe classroom culture with clear expectations, differentiating learning and liaising with Learning Support so every student is appropriately supported.
  • Implement quality assessment practices, monitoring student progress and reporting accurately and on time.
  • Care pastorally for students so each is known, seen and loved; communicate with parents in line with school policy; and contribute to faculty planning and to the pastoral, co-curricular and outdoor education programs.
CHILD SAFETY

At SHCS, child safety is inseparable from who we are. Our commitment that every student is known, seen and loved means building a culture where children are safe, listened to, and confident that any concern they raise will be taken seriously and acted upon.

The School complies with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012 and the NSW Child Safe Standards. Every staff member shares this responsibility: implementing our child safety policies, maintaining professional boundaries, promptly reporting any risk of harm, and modelling the care and respect we ask of our students. We seek to appoint people who welcome that responsibility.

WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY

The School is committed to a healthy and safe workplace. All staff must take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others, follow work health and safety policies and procedures, and participate in school safety by completing risk assessments and reporting hazards and incidents – particularly important in a laboratory setting.
